This role is being advertised as both ongoing and non-ongoing, with the employment type to be determined in negotiation with the preferred candidate and the NIAA delegate.

Where a non-ongoing specified term is offered, this would be for an initial period of up to 12 months, with possibility of extension up to a maximum period of two years.

A non-ongoing offer may result in conversion to an ongoing offer of employment, however this must occur within 18 months from the opening date of this advertisement.

The Opportunity

We are looking for motivated people to fill a number of roles in engagement teams across a range of locations in Greater WA – Perth, Kalgoorlie, South Hedland and Geraldton. You will be working in diverse teams and engaging with First Nations communities and service providers to deliver outcomes in line with community aspirations on behalf of the Australian Government. We offer challenging, interesting and stimulating work, engaging across all levels of government and working directly with the community. The occupants of these roles will work on implementing and delivering range of government initiatives and commitments that support and improve the well-being of First Nations People.

As an Engagement Officer (APS5), key responsibilities of the role include:

  • manage effective internal and external relationships, negotiate with stakeholders and resolve issues
  • undertake regular travel to regional towns and remote First Nations communities
  • support the local development and delivery of place-based initiatives in partnership with community and stakeholders
  • monitor funding agreements and provider delivery and provide advice on contractual requirements, performance, and reporting
  • assist in local coordination and act as a point of contact for key government priorities such as Closing the Gap and implementing the Uluru Statement from the Heart
  • contribute to ministerial briefings and correspondence coordination
  • assist with the implementation of culturally appropriate strategies for working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
As an Engagement Team Leader (APS6), key responsibilities in addition to the above include:
  • lead a small team of 1-2 Engagement Officers to deliver the NIAA's work program within the Agency's Key Performance Measures and quality indicators
  • draft ministerial briefings and correspondence and provide quality assurance services
  • develop and maintain complex internal and external relationships with key NIAA stakeholders, providing appropriate advice and managing the resolution of issues or complaints
  • undertake complex procedural, administrative and service related tasks that support NIAA business activities or management of a project
  • conduct research and analysis on complex matters within area of expertise.
In addition, some regional and remote-based positions may be eligible for:
  • remote Locality Allowance
  • additional Annual Leave of seven (7) days per-annum (as a remote locality)
  • eligible dependant/s (partner/ children) who reside with the employee, access to annual remote locality leave fare/s.

  • draft high quality and concise advice briefs, presentations and reports for a range of audiences and be able to support co-design processes
  • be able to work autonomously with limited supervision
  • manage and respond quickly to competing priorities and emerging issues
  • effectively supervise staff and provide constructive management with a focus on capability development, team building and leadership (APS6).

This position has direct engagement with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and service providers, or is involved in the development of programmes and policy. You will require a high level of cultural competency, including:

  • demonstrated understanding of the matters impacting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • demonstrated high level ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • demonstrated high level capability and commitment to continue to develop cultural competency.

The successful candidate will be required to be assessed through our pre-employment screening checks, such as an Australian Criminal History Check.
