The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system. The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 475 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.
The Executive Director – Legal Practice (EDLP), one of two, reports to the Solicitor and forms part of the OPP Executive.
This key executive role encompasses:
- Leadership of strategy and risk for the Legal Practice ensuring high quality community outcomes and strong internal people engagement with a focus on performance, building capability, inclusion, and wellbeing
- Oversight of critical decisions, ensuring that formal consultation on key legal decisions with the DPP and Chief Crown Prosecutor takes place
- Representing the OPP with key stakeholders including the Courts, Victoria Police, Department of Justice & Community Safety, victim support groups and other entities
An outstanding leader and lawyer who can demonstrate the aptitude and attitude to support the Solicitor in enhancing the performance of the OPP legal function, work effectively across all levels and engage expert lawyers with the OPP vision and strategy.
You are likely to have substantial criminal, prosecutions, investigations and/or litigation experience. You demonstrate a background of effective leadership, insight, ethics, and discretion. Your communication and influencing skills are excellent. You understand the need to engage people with a compelling vision and ongoing transformation focus.
