Job description

The Role

An opportunity exists to join a dynamic and vibrant Defence project team for an APS5 EO Engineer, working with a technologically advanced suite of Maritime Explosive Weapons.

Located in Canberra, ACT and Penrith, NSW, we are currently seeking motivated engineers searching for a new career opportunity who fit into our agile, empowering, positive and open organisation.

The key objective for our engineers is to develop in depth technical knowledge in maritime weapon technologies.

Some of your key duties may include:

  • Effectively performing critical and complex engineering activities whilst working within an Integrated Product Team (IPT).
  • Knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.
  • Provide detailed Explosive Ordnance Engineering technical and professional advice in relation to complex work.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.

We offer rewarding careers where you can excel as we invest in your growth, providing direction, leadership, and recognition.

International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR) is the United States regulation that controls the manufacture, sale and distribution of defence and space-related articles and services. The ITAR contains a list of “restricted” countries that are unable to access ITAR controlled information, and therefore we will need to know if an applicant holds dual citizenship to one of the restricted countries to ensure they meet the requirement to perform the role (and we do not breach any ITAR requirements).

About our Team

Maritime Explosive Ordnance Systems Program Office (MEOSPO) is an integral part of Explosive Materiel Branch (EMB), which is part of the new Guided Weapons & Explosive Ordnance Delivery Division (GWEODD). Our team is made up of various disciplines (including engineering, project management, commercial, logistics, and corporate enabling services). We are located in Canberra, Penrith, Amberley, Melbourne and Stirling, and our focus is to acquire and sustain guided weapons and munitions for the Australian Defence Force.

GWEODD is dedicated to providing our staff with a diverse, manageable, favourable work-life balance, and we support flexible working arrangements. We will also invest in your training and development to ensure your time with us is deeply rewarding, both personally and professionally. We are committed to achieving a workplace culture that is inclusive and diverse; one which directly reflects the needs, and scope of Defence’s varied operational requirements.

GWEODD comprises approximately 560 dedicated employees performing activities such as requirements setting; contracting; procurement; international logistics; domestic manufacturing; item management and maintenance, and co-ordination of disposal.

GWEO-DD partners with domestic and international industry to deliver materiel capability to Defence, managing a multi-billion-dollar portfolio of complex, high-profile acquisitions and sustainment activities to support the ADF.

Our people are capable, innovative, committed and diverse. We support an inclusive culture that emphasises respect and collaboration.

In EMB, you will enjoy experiences and opportunities that, as an APS employee, you simply would not get with any other organisation.

Other benefits include:

  • 15.4% superannuation;
  • Access to personalised professional development pathways, including opportunities for Defence-funded post-graduate study;
  • Additional leave days between Christmas and New Year;
  • Focus on work/life balance; and
  • Salary sacrifice opportunities.

Our Ideal Candidate

As an APS5 EO Engineering Professional, you will be accountable, under broad direction, to perform and achieve complex tasks in order to meet Defence expectations.

You will exercise both initiative and sound professional judgement in applying the appropriate practices and procedures as required. Your communication and organisational skills in managing stakeholder engagement will be highly desirable for ensuring your stakeholders are intelligently informed in relation to difficult issues.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Be accountable for exercising assigned engineering authorities and any Technical Regulatory Authority delegations.
  • Apply engineering knowledge and experience to identify issues and uncertainties and take these into account when planning, decision making and priority setting.
  • Demonstrate Explosive Ordnance Engineering knowledge and provide advice and recommendations on the development of and advancements to establish engineering principles, techniques, methods and regulations.
  • Assess technical and design packages including scoping, planning, reviewing, provide recommendations and contribute to the implementation of actions.
  • Evaluate that the delivered materiel meets requirements and legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks, provide recommendations and contribute to the implementation of actions.
  • Identify, assess and monitor risks to ensure safety aspects of Defence materiel systems are considered and incorporated into Explosive Ordnance Engineering activities.
  • Develop engineering artefacts required to progress introduction and sustainment of maritime weapon systems.

Application Closing Date: Thursday 11 April, 2024
