Job description

WUNGENING ABORIGINAL CORPORATION

Healing Mind, Body & Spirit

First Nations people are strongly encouraged to apply

Our organisation is committed to protecting children and young people from harm. We require all applicants to undergo an extensive screening process prior to appointment.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

For nearly 35 years, Wungening has led the way with culturally secure programs. Our core focus is addressing the harmful effects of alcohol and other drugs on individuals, families and communities.

This is a unique career opportunity to make a real difference.

To heal mind, body and spirit, we now proudly provide:

  • Alcohol and other drug programs
  • A refuge for women and children escaping family violence
  • A culturally responsive emergency relief program
  • Reintegration and accommodation support (justice)

We also lead a suite of cross-agency alliances, supporting:

  • Reintegration into community after release from prison
  • In-home support services aimed at keeping children safe at home
  • Pathways to housing for the homeless
  • Out of Home Care Services

Committed to Aboriginal-led solutions, our board of directors and CEO are all Aboriginal people. We currently work from 14 metro locations and employ over 200 staff.

Join us in achieving our vision: healthy communities our way.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This position has been created as part of the Communications Team and will report to the Manager of Strategic Communications and Marketing. The role is being created to recruit a specialist policy and advocacy role, in recognition of the need for a dedicated resource to manage media, social media, and External Communications more broadly.

The Communications Team is at a pivotal point at the time of advertising this position. It has been 2 years since the team was created, and it has taken shape with a broad remit over that time with the expectation to produce a high standard of work. There are currently significant demands on the team, given the growing nature of Wungening, with new programs and services coming on board in the next 12 months.

It is intended that this position would help expand the capability of the Communications Team to increase its ability to promote the work of the organisation, and develop strong relationships and networks amongst other community service providers, and community.

This role would ideally suit an agile and solutions focused person with a team focus, who is able to work autonomously and to a deadline. Opportunities also exist through the role to develop management skills, pending suitability of the applicant.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in copy writing for publication
  • Experience in projects, events, or community services
  • Able to work independently and autonomously to meet deadline
  • Able to be flexible in managing workload
  • A sound understanding of policy processes

Desirable

  • Qualifications in Public Relations, Journalism, Policy development or similar field
  • An understanding and interest in policy development processes
  • Experience in working alongside Aboriginal People
  • Campaign experience

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Working with Children Card
  • Police Clearance
  • WA Drivers Licence

JOB BENEFITS

  • 3-day additional Christmas shutdown leave
  • 4-week top-up maternity leave
