The Role
As an apprentice in the College’s Grounds Department, you will be part of a team responsible to the Grounds and Maintenance Manager for undertaking a range of activities associated with the maintenance of the College grounds and gardens to a high standard. These activities may require you to operate machinery, work with chemicals and/or drive vehicles (provided you hold a current C Class Driver’s Licence).
In addition to working at the College, you will be required to enter into a training contract with the College and undertake the associated training and studies required to complete a 4 year apprenticeship in Sports Turf Management. It is likely that you will be enrolled at the South Metropolitan TAFE in Murdoch to undertake these studies.
This is an ongoing, full-time role, as a key member of the team working across the 19-hectare campus situated on Gabbiljee (Bull Creek).
Key Responsibilities:
- Assisting with the maintenance of garden beds and grassed areas, including mowing, pruning, whipper snipping, mulching, spraying and rubbish removal, throughout the College’s campus to a high standard using best horticultural and green-keeping practices.
- Assisting with routine and emergency maintenance of the College’s reticulation system, including undertaking minor repairs as directed.
- Assisting with the preparation of sporting fields, including line marking and sports goal installation, as scheduled.
- Assisting with the establishment and upgrade of both hard and soft landscaping features throughout the College campus.
About You
As a school Facilities Sports Turf Management Apprentice with limited previous experience, you will still demonstrate several important skills and aptitudes. These skills will develop over time and cover both technical abilities and soft skills, helping you effectively manage and maintain school grounds. Therefore, you will be able to display an appropriate:
- Aptitude for operating role-related equipment (mowers, aerators, spreaders) with training.
- Ability and appetite to learn basic mechanical skills for routine maintenance and minor repairs, including practical trouble-shooting skills.
- Understanding of the basics of irrigation systems and water management.
- Ability to contribute to the design and maintenance of attractive outdoor spaces, including knowledge of landscape design principles, hardscape installation, and irrigation systems.
- Willingness to undergo practical training sessions under supervision and apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings with guidance.
- Proven experience in meeting deadlines and managing time efficiently.
- Build effective communication skills for interacting with supervisors, colleagues, and school staff.
