Job description

Join the best. Be yourself.

“Being the best isn’t just about being the best professionals. It’s about being the best place to work, grow, be yourself.”

Wotton + Kearney (W+K) has been in the insurance and risk business for just over 20 years. From a founding partnership of two in 2002, W+K has grown to be a market-leading firm with more than 600 people across Australia and New Zealand.

The role

Our firm is experiencing significant growth, placing increased demand on our services. With the arrival of the firm's first CFO, this is an exciting time to join and shape our Finance team.

As a key member of the Finance team, you'll take a hands-on approach to managing our finances and ensuring regulatory compliance. You'll be directly involved in overseeing monthly reporting, handling tax obligations, and navigating complex financial challenges. In addition to working closely with the numbers, you'll actively mentor an Accountant, an Assistant Accountant, and a Senior Trust Officer. You'll also refine financial processes and drive our growth.

This role requires someone who is ready to pull up their sleeves and dive into the details. If you're ready for a position that combines hands-on responsibility with significant impact, we invite you to explore this exciting opportunity with us.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the month-end reporting cycle. Prepare monthly management reports and provide insightful commentary on the results.
  • Maintain the integrity of the General Ledger and ensure compliance with accounting policies, including month-end balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Manage daily cash flow reporting to support effective financial decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and oversee the preparation of various returns, including BAS, FBT, PAYG, Payroll tax, Workers Compensation, etc.
  • Identify and implement procedural and policy improvement opportunities to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Manage the firm's statutory reporting and compliance obligations with relevant legislations, including ASIC, ATO, and Law Society.
  • Coordinate and manage the annual audit and tax preparation processes.
  • Mentor and develop direct reports to enhance their skills and contribute to their professional growth.
  • Assist in the budgeting and forecasting process to support strategic financial planning.
  • Manage the firm's credit card facility and expense policy, ensuring adherence to established guidelines.
  • Provide assistance with shareholder reporting to meet reporting requirements.
  • Oversee the management and compliance of internal fee funds.
  • Any ad-hoc projects or duties as requested by the CFO/Financial Controller.
We are seeking an individual who has:
  • Experience in an accounting role within legal or professional services.
  • Professional accounting qualification (CPA or CA).
  • Proven experience in financial management and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and taxation.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop finance professionals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong drive and resilience, with the ability to manage change effectively.
  • Ability to identify process improvement opportunities and work with the wider Finance team to implement changes.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and reporting obligations.
Why Wotton + Kearney?

  • FLEX for all. We care about client outcomes, quality, and business and cultural contributions. If you can make that work by working part-time, working “irregular hours” or working from home – then so can we.
  • Our mentoring program offers continuous support and guidance throughout your career. You'll have access to training, conferences, and workshops, keeping you updated on the latest developments in the legal and insurance industries.
  • Our culture sets us apart. Collegiate, open, innovative, passionate about everything we do.
  • We give back to the community. Join us in CSR activities to support our charity partners, from building houses in Cambodia, participating in fun runs or baking cup cakes, there's a way for everyone to contribute.
  • Leaders of the pack. Work with a firm that understands its purpose, has a singular focus on the insurance industry and is excited by the potential for growth in our market!
