Job description

Permanent - Full Time

Port Macquarie

At Australia’s Oyster Coast, we believe oysters are the unsung heroes of the sea. With phenomenal health benefits, positive impacts on the environment, and quite simply, a fine food shared between friends – we’re committed to continually improving our farm to fork operations to provide consistently better oysters.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Hatchery Technician, you will be working in our Shellfish Hatchery to care for our oyster larvae and support our on-land nursery. Assisting the Hatchery Manager, your role is key in maintaining optimal conditions and meeting production targets so that we continue to deliver high-quality and sustainable Australian oysters to our customers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Engaging in land-based nursery operations, including spat handling, grading and meticulous record-keeping.
  • Conducting regular water testing, analysis and documentation to ensure hatchery and nursery conditions are optimal.
  • Competently managing wild-caught spat, including delicate processes such as filling spat oysters into bags.
  • Collaborating with the team to establish and refine best practices across the hatchery and nursery.
  • Adhering rigorously to operational protocols to maintain the health and quality of our oysters.
  • Monitoring and maintaining water quality parameters, undertaking routine maintenance tasks, and equipment upkeep.
  • Monitoring estuarine conditions, including broodstock and hatchery-produced spat.

Flexibility in working hours, including weekends and public holidays, is essential for this role. Experience in an aquaculture hatchery, food safety or laboratory operations is highly desirable but not essential.  Please note that a current driver’s licence is essential for this position.

ABOUT YOU

  • Do you have a deep passion for breeding and caring for oysters?
  • Do you want a rewarding career with a strong regional employer in a sustainable industry?
  • Do you want to live and work on the Mid-North Coast, renowned for its natural beauty and stunning beaches?
  • Are you a stickler for detail who would win gold if record-keeping and rule-following were Olympic sports?
  • Are you a reliable and proactive team player who can also excel when working independently?

If you answered yes to the above, we want to hear from you.

ABOUT US

You will join an amazing team of professional and friendly people who are committed to best practice methods, consistent quality and continual improvement pushing the boundaries on how an oyster company conducts itself. We are passionate about constantly improving, innovating, and evolving our oyster business. Above all, we want more Australians to eat more oysters, more often.

WE OFFER

A competitive salary, career development, great employee benefits, and the opportunity to work in a dynamic and expanding vertically integrated Australian oyster business as part of a collaborative and hardworking team.
