Sounds pretty awesome right? Kununurra. WA home of the picturesque Lake Argyle, surrounding gorges, waterfalls, adventurous fishing experiences and it sits 75km off the WA/NT Border practically making us cousins.

Wunan Health is the lead agency of headspace Kununurra and provides support to young people aged 12-25 experiencing mild to moderate or emerging mental health issues. The multidisciplinary team at headspace Kununurra work to improve health, social, vocational and educational outcomes for young people. As part of the Wunan Health family, we are committed to primary health care and our dedicated team comprises of General Practitioners/Registrars, Registered Nurses, Sexual Health Nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners and our experienced Medical Administration team.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Youth Access Worker is part of the headspace centre team and their purpose is to effectively engage, plan and coordinate care for young people aged 12-25 years that are referred to the headspace centre. They will do this by assisting the processes for intake, assessment and review, dealing with enquiries, supporting young people to access services and provide coordination of care to meet individual needs.

The role will work in collaboration with other professionals including general practitioners and allied health providers in providing services to young people, and will advocate on behalf of young people accessing headspace services. The role requires effective collaboration with the team in providing a range of culturally-sensitive activities to engage young people in services provided by headspace, and in the delivery of individual or group-based skills training activities.

Job Requirements - Essential:

  • Undergraduate or graduate qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, or Occupational Therapy with training in Mental Health, or Mental Health Nursing, or similar tertiary qualification and including drug and alcohol counselling.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the challenges and experiences of young people from diverse backgrounds including young people who are culturally and linguistically diverse, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or questioning).  
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement to young people in the local government, health, education, employment and youth sectors. 
  • Demonstrated experience with social media as a communication tool. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate community awareness programs. 
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and database applications.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to priorities and manage multiple and competing work tasks and deliver to agreed deadlines. 
  • Maintain a current WA check for working with young people.
  • Undergo a current and satisfactory Police Check. Maintain a current driver’s license.

Desirable, it would be advantageous if you also have:

  • Current full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA) or current full membership with the applicable Australian Professional Association (ie AASW).
  • A strong understanding of Aboriginal people in general, and of Aboriginal people and communities in the East Kimberley in particular

Pre-employment requirements

☒ Satisfactory Criminal History Check (not older than 6 months)

☒ Current Working with children clearance

☒ Current Australian unrestricted ‘C’ class Driver’s license
