  • Part-time, fixed term contract until 30th June 2024 (contract extension dependant on funding)
  • Based salary between $67,787 to $75,272 + 17% superannuation (pro-rata to 0.4 FTE or 14 hours per week)

About the opportunity

Are you passionate about youth mental health? Maybe you are someone who has personal, lived experience with mental health issues and wants to provide peer support to help others get through a tough time.

The Brain and Mind Centre at Headspace, Camperdown has an exciting traineeship for a junior staff member to get a foot in the door to an amazing career path.

As the Headspace Youth Engagement and PeerWork Trainee, you will work closely with the Community Development and Engagement Officer and participate in our youth mental health engagement initiatives and presentations.

You will be involved in facilitating youth workshops and groups, as well as planning, and undertaking community awareness activities and working with youth groups within our service and in our local community.

Ideal working days are Tuesday's and Wednesday's but there is some flexibility.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • co-plan, co-develop, and co-deliver community education regarding youth mental wellbeing
  • liaise closely with local secondary schools and youth services on health promotion sessions
  • support the CDE officer to maximise opportunities to promote the local headspace service
  • develop, organise, and arrange distribution of health promotion information and resources
  • assist the CDE officer to co-facilitate and further develop the Youth Advisory Group (YAG)
  • under supervision, support, mentor and empower young people to make informed decisions.

About you

  • tertiary qualification in youth and/or community development (active students are highly desirable)
  • experience working in a community development context within a paid role or placement
  • awareness of the lived experience of mental health issues
  • an understanding of the impacts of mental health and mental illness on young people
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills needed for working with community stakeholders
  • sound knowledge of desktop computers, including familiarity with the Microsoft suite
  • current NSW driver's license is highly desirable
  • a personal interest in music or the ability to play a musical instrument is highly desirable for a Youth Engagement initiative but is not essential.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the reasons for the position.
