In this role, you will guide and support the University’s chemical risk management systems to enhance safety, and compliance with relevant legislation and Codes of Practice. You will develop and lead collaborative projects that enhance and embed chemical Safety and compliance requirements into daily decision making in corporate governance systems and processes at UQ. This position will also have a key role in facilitating the chemical management framework and accompanying procedures and guidelines, for the mitigation of identified chemicals risks. Working within the HSW Division, the position will also be expected to perform general high-level HSW advisory activities.The Health, Safety and Wellness Consultant (Chemicals) is responsible for providing specialist advice to the University and its staff about chemicals management to enhance Safety and compliance, best practices and how to reduce the impact of chemical risk factors at work and will work closely with health, Safety and Wellness staff within the Universities faculties, institutes and other business units.Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:Develop and lead collaborative projects that embed chemical Safety and compliance requirements at UQ.Implement the chemicals management framework for the University, that includes effective chemical inventory, safe use of scheduled medicines and poisons, chemicals of security concern and hazardous area management.Support the UQ health, Safety and Wellness network (particularly faculty/institute HSW managers) in developing and enhancing chemicals management, Safety and compliance across work units.Provision of advice and assistance to internal and external stakeholders on health, Safety and Wellness matters, with a particular emphasis on chemicals management, Safety and compliance.Engage constructively with internal stakeholders, including Heads of Schools and other University management, the HSW network at UQ etc to enhance chemical safety outcomes for the University.Develop, monitor and review policies, procedures and guidelines that assist in enhancing chemicals management, Safety and compliance, and minimise exposure to chemical risk factors in the workplace.Conduct or contribute to incident investigations, particularly where organisational factors have contributed to adverse outcomes.Design, develop and implement workplace HSW programs (including training and audit programs), with a particular emphasis on chemicals management, chemical Safety and compliance, and chemical risk related matters.This is a full-time, continuing position.At HEW level 8, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $108,975 - $122,176, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $127,500 - $142,946 annually. As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.About YouTertiary qualifications (undergraduate or postgraduate) in science or applied science, e.g., Chemistry, Biochemistry, Occupational Hygiene, or a related field, in conjunction with a minimum of five years practical experience in chemical safety management.Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing and evaluating chemical safety risk management programs and initiatives in large, complex organisations.Practical experience in applying legislative requirements that demonstrates an ability to apply legislation, standards and codes of practice such as Chapter 7 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017 (Qld amended), Medicines and Poisons Act 2019 (Qld) and Medicines and Poisons (Medicines) Regulation 2021 (Qld), National Code of Practice for chemicals of security concern.Demonstrated experience of strong engagement and partnership building skills that could be applied to the design and implementation of corporate initiatives which may comprise complex policy and operational aspects. An ability to develop and present effective training and awareness programs in areas related to safety leadership, safety culture and chemical safety areas.Demonstrated ability to gather, analyse and interpret data to produce succinct, definitive and well-written, compelling reports.DesirableKnowledge of university operating proceduresPost-graduate Qualifications in Chemistry, OHS or Occupational Hygiene.Experience working with Chemicals.In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:Work Rights: You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply.
