Bowen Rail Company is seeking a Health & Safety professional to join our team in Bowen. As the Health & Safety Coordinator, you will be responsible for supporting Bowen Rail Company by developing and implementing policies, systems, processes, skills, and knowledge to support and manage health, fitness, and safety accordingly with a rail operations environment and all employees.
This role is based in Bowen and the main place of work is at the Bowen Rail Provisioning Yard (25kms north of Bowen). Required fieldwork includes traveling to the Carmichael Rail Network with periods requiring accommodation in remote locations.
Key Accountabilities:
- Safety Leadership: Set the standard for safety at Bowen Rail Company. Demonstrate visible safety leadership in line with the values.
- Assist with the maintenance of the Safety Management System and supports policy, procedures, programs, and initiatives to support compliance with the Rail Safety Accreditation and Work Health and Safety systems.
- Coordinate the implementation of safety initiatives and programs as required.
- Coordinate HSQ incident reporting, documentation, performance data, trends, non-conformance, safety competencies, and compliance record keeping and reporting through system maintenance and compliance.
- Support delivery of inductions, coaching, and training across all aspects of safety (within area of subject matter expertise).
- Works collaboratively with key stakeholders to develop, and deliver return to work and rehabilitation services including policy and procedure development, templates, tools, stakeholder training, and reporting mechanisms and are comparable to leading practices standards.
- Works and consults with the worker, the manager, human resources, health and safety, the workers treating practitioners, occupational health and rehabilitation providers as well as the organisations medical advisers to plan, consult and deliver injury management services.
- Advises on all conditional health assessments, including medicals, and is responsible to oversee/govern/monitor medical conditions, treatment, and periodical reviews.
- Takes ownership of the health assessment provider and administers relationship with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), including ensuring efficient systems and processes to streamline business processes. Monitors and reports on service-level agreements.
- Contribute to Drug and Alcohol frameworks and management, including advising, facilitating rehabilitation casework and facilitating the Drug and Alcohol testing program
- Contribute to and support the development and implementation of return to work from personal injury/illness, including assessing fitness for duty through consultation with the employee, their treating health professional, the manager, and human resources.
- Advise and is a key contributor/developer of all suitable duty’s plans.
- Responsible for managing/facilitating workers' compensation processes, including claims process within statutory timeframes, consulting with HSQ on notifiable events and mandatory reporting, and liaising with relevant stakeholders including legal advisors.
- Establish and lead internal stakeholder meetings to deliver effective injury and rehabilitation services.
- Professional presentation of Health and Rehabilitation key topics to stakeholders via training and mentoring.
- Ensure maintenance of case files, reporting systems and tracking metrics to measure the performance of rehabilitation and return to work service function.

- SARC - Safely Access the Rail Corridor (Nationally Accredited) or ability to obtain.
- RIW Card (Rail Industry Worker Identification) or ability to obtain.
- Relevant qualification in RTW injury management / allied health or relevant qualifications.
- Relevant qualification in related safety discipline (Minimum Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety)
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience in rehabilitation and return to work coordination.
- Experience developing and implementing rehabilitation frameworks.
- Experience in safety-critical work environments in rail, mining/resources, or construction.
- Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary work, health and safety practices, and Qld workers' compensation.
- Computer proficient (Microsoft Office, systems).
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and professional presentation skills.
- Ability to commute across Bowen Rail Company site locations to support operational requirements.
