About the Role:
Mater Dei College has the opportunity for a part-time, permanent Home Economics Assistant to become an integral part of the College’s Home Economics Department, joining us Semester 2, 2024.
The Home Economics Assistant will work closely with the College’s current other Home Economics Assistant’s to assist with the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment by maintaining equipment, materials and resources for use in classes, displays and demonstrations.
We are seeking a vibrant, friendly, and organised individual who is committed to supporting the Home Economics Department to ensure that both students and teachers have sufficient material and facilities to work with.
The Home Economics Assistant will be in attendance 3 days per week, for 41.6 weeks per year (inclusive of 2 days worked each school holidays).
The Home Economics Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks that are inclusive of, but not limited to:
- Preparing relevant equipment for practical classes on a lesson-by-lesson basis
- Ordering and maintaining stock e.g. food and textile supplies, cleaning products, replacing and ordering items and equipment that are damaged when required
- Providing and maintaining a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with Workplace, Health and Safety Legislation
- Washing and cleaning classroom equipment on a daily basis after each practical lesson
- Administration duties as required
Selection Criteria:
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a high level of organisational and time management skills, with the proven ability to communicate effectively, whilst supporting the Catholic ethos.
The successful applicant will also demonstrate the ability to work well both independently as well as in a team.
Demonstrated experience in a school or hospitality environment will be viewed favourably. .
Qualifications Required:
- Terms of Employment
- Hold a current Working with Children Check (WWC)
- Hold a current National Police Clearance from the Department of Education
- Annually complete the online Child Protection Procedures and Mandatory Reporting Training
- Hold or be working towards an Accreditation to Work in a Catholic School

- Proven ability to work well independently as well as in a group
- Proven ability to be flexible and confident in different situations and to provide assistance across a variety of tasks
- Basic bookkeeping skills
- The demonstrated ability to ensure best practices in relation to food handling and hygiene requirements
- Show initiative and willingness to be pro-active
- Great oral and written communication skills
