Inspector – SafeWork NSW – Health and Safe Design

Grade: Inspector

Salary Range: $108,610 - $117,937 + superannuation

Location: Parramatta or Gosford

Term: Ongoing

About the team

SafeWork NSW is the state’s workplace Health and Safety regulator. Our focus is to reduce work related fatalities, serious injuries, and illnesses by securing compliance with work Health and Safety and associated legislation and improving the safety culture in NSW workplaces. We also work in partnership with SIRA to improve the return-to-work practices of employers.

The Specialist Operations Team is responsible for undertaking the provision of expert technical advice, guidance and compliance services in the following disciplines Ergonomics, Return to Work, Working Environment, Psychological Health and Safety and Workplace Health.

We are looking for inspectors who will predominately specialise in ergonomics and / or return to work. Our ideal candidate will have strong technical industry knowledge, practical workplace safety experience or safety related qualifications in either ergonomics, workers compensation, rehabilitation, injury management and return to work. You will apply your industry knowledge, experience, and qualifications to work in partnership with NSW workplaces to assist them in creating and maintaining work Health and Safety standards so that workers return home safely each day.

As an Inspector in the specialist operations team, you will be responsible for undertaking the provision of compliance services and technical advice and assistance to both internal and external stakeholders. Your focus will be on ergonomics and / or return to work, but as a member of the specialist operations team, you will also be required to assist with other directorate responsibilities including psychological health & safety, working environment and workplace health.

About the role 

Your duties may include: 

  • Provide technical advice, guidance and support (including presentations) to internal and external stakeholders on prevention and response matters relating to ergonomics and / or return to work
  • Conduct workplace visits and investigations into workplace incidents, injuries and fatalities to ensure healthy and Safe workplaces
  • Manage complex ergonomics and / or return to work issues whilst balancing stakeholder interests and ensuring WHS outcomes are achieved and promoted
  • Requirement to undertake workplace visits (travel across NSW may be required), make enquiries, gather evidence and take compliance action
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, including law enforcement authorities and policymakers 
  • as a member of the specialist operations team, you will also be required to assist with other directorate responsibilities including psychological health & safety, workplace Health and working environment.

To be successful, you will:  

  • Have relevant qualifications and/or significant industry experience in fields such as Ergonomics, Health Science, Applied Science, occupational rehabilitation, work Health and Safety, injury management, workers compensation insurance.
  • Have exceptional communication skills to engage and influence key stakeholders to improve regulatory outcomes
  • Be a team player who is passionate about workplace safety, inclusion and diversity, is results focussed and will actively contribute to a culture of knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement
  • Have a high degree of integrity, excellent judgement and ability to scan, analyse and identify needs and gaps 
  • Have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills  
  • Be resilient and have the ability to work autonomously and be part of a diverse team  
  • Be able to take factual notes and write comprehensive reports  
  • Have the ability to manage competing priorities in a timely manner  
  • Be a team player who is passionate about contributing to the reduction of workplace injuries and improving support for injured workers

  • Work a 38-hour working week, including some weekends and participate in the After-Hours Emergency Response Service  
  • Receive an attractive salary package along with the required tools of the trade, including a vehicle with access to private use (currently at a cost of approximately $210 per fortnight)  
  • Be able to access flexible working conditions within operational requirements 

Essential requirements 

  • Ability to travel, work remotely and out of usual business hours
  • Hold a NSW ‘C’ class drivers' licence with a satisfactory safe driving record and a requirement to maintain the safe driving record throughout employment
  • Satisfactory criminal record check
  • Satisfactory medical assessment capacity regarding physical and psychological impacts of the inherent duties of the role
  • Undertake the 12-month New Inspector Training Program (NITP). This intensive program is delivered by our Registered Training Organisation and combines mandatory components of induction, class training, online learning, completion of set assessments and tasks, and extensive on-the-job field training with regular travel throughout NSW.
