We are seeking an International Student Worker Advocate for a part-time, fixed term position to 31/03/2025 to work on our "Right Start" project in partnership with the League of Latin American Migrants Australia (LLAMA), and supported by Study Melbourne.
The project aims to support International Students' participation in the job market and reduce labour exploitation through one-on-one consultations and outreach events combining employment services, labour rights education, and exploitation screening.
Key responsibilities and duties include:
- Conducting pre-employment consultations with International Students on job seeking, resume review, interview prep, workplace rights, etc.
- Organising and delivering outreach and education sessions, and developing materials on employment and workers' rights for International Students.
- Building relationships with stakeholders like student groups, education providers, unions etc.
- Supporting project monitoring, evaluation and reporting activities.
This is a ~0.8 FTE role (24-28 hours per week negotiable, suitable for International Student applicants) based in Carlton South with potential for hybrid working. Some regional travel in Victoria required.
ABOUT THE MIGRANT WORKERS CENTREThe Migrant Workers Centre Inc (MWC) is a not-for-profit organisation open to workers in Victoria who were born overseas. We connect migrant workers with one another and empower them to understand and enforce their rights. The Migrant Workers Centre assists workers from emerging communities to address problems they encounter in workplaces and collaborates with unions and community partners to seek long-term solutions to the exploitation of migrant workers.
The MWC’s activities are organised around three areas of work:
- Education – helping migrant workers to understand their rights at work by delivering community education that is culturally and linguistically appropriate;
- Enforcement – assisting migrant workers who are experiencing workplace issues, such as wage theft and discrimination, to enforce their workplace rights and win just outcomes; and
- Advocacy – working with migrant communities to improve their lives in Australia by conducting research, empowering community leaders and members, and advocating to decision-makers.
The MWC encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds with a passion for migrant workers' rights. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of issues facing International Students in the Victorian workforce and labour market.
- Ability to explain industrial concepts like National Employment Standards, workplace rights, awards etc.
- Understanding of employment services principles and practices like resume development, job search strategies, etc.
- Excellent verbal communication skills including public speaking ability and fluency in a language used by International Student communities (e.g. Spanish).
- Ability to build effective stakeholder relationships with groups like community leaders, organisations, and unions.
- A focus on the perspectives and needs of International Students and migrant workers from diverse backgrounds.
You must have a valid driver's license and right to work in Australia. Some after-hours/weekend work will be required.
Previous experience in a similar role is highly desirable but not compulsory.

Understands and applies employment services principles and practices such as: resume and cover letter development, interview preparation techniques, and job search strategies.
Understands the Victorian job market and common barriers faced by International Students in securing employment.
Verbal communication
Understands the target audience and the objectives of the communication.
Conveys ideas and information confidently, and in a clear and interesting way.
Handles difficult and sensitive communications well.
Is able to provide information to a group of people in a formal manner, often using audio-visual materials.
Fluency in a language common among International Student communities (e.g. Spanish).

Works collaboratively and effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, such as community leaders, community organisations, and unions.
Seeks out opportunities to work with stakeholders to deliver programs, projects, and services.
Shares information quickly and accurately to those who need it, as appropriate.

Considers situations, activities, decisions, and outcomes from the perspective of workers.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS AND INFORMATION- Applicants must have a current and valid driver’s license.
- Applicants must be able on occasion to work after business hours and on the weekend.
- Applicants must have a valid visa that provides work rights or be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- The position is based at the Migrant Workers Centre in Carlton South, Victoria, but some regional travel by car within Victoria will be required.
- Employment conditions include a monthly RDO (pro-rata) and 12% superannuation.

The role has a starting salary of $77,717.73 (pro-rata) plus 12% superannuation. Hybrid working from home arrangements possible.
