UNSW IT is part of UNSW’s Finance and Operations Division and provides reliable, cost effective and state of the art IT services. The Division was established in recent years to provide corporate services in support of the Faculties and Divisions.
An IT Business Analyst at the University of New South Wales plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between technology and business needs. This position involves collaborating with various stakeholders to identify, analyse, and document business requirements, facilitating the development of innovative IT solutions that enhance the university's operational efficiency, student experience, and research capabilities. This role combines technical expertise and business acumen to drive digital transformation and ensure alignment with the university's strategic goals.The role of the IT Business Analysis is to work within the broader Portfolio Blueprints planning team to enable the production of ‘Blueprints’ that inform the make-up of future portfolios of work over the 3-year, 5-year and 10-year Investment Plan periods.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Conduct a discovery exercise upon commencement to ensure objectives, priorities and approaches are agreed and aligned across the broader Portfolio Blueprints team.
- Catalogue priority systems for investigation based on prior reviews and analytics and agree with the Portfolio Blueprints Program Manager and Architecture
- Develop criteria for the classification and descriptors of recommended future systems work to be undertaken. Ensure this includes risk ratings which will be utilised to prioritise future systems work.
- Agree ‘data points’ for collection against each system under review (mapped to UNSW Caudit):.
- Collaborate with university departments and stakeholders to elicit and document clear and comprehensive business requirements, ensuring a deep understanding of their needs and objectives.
- Evaluate existing business processes and workflows to identify opportunities for improvement, streamlining, and automation, while maintaining alignment with university objectives.
- Work with cross-functional teams to design IT solutions, applications, and systems that address identified business requirements, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and university standards.
- Create detailed and accurate documentation, including business requirement specifications, use cases, and process flow diagrams, to support solution development and ensure clarity for all stakeholders.
- Collaborate with university departments and stakeholders to elicit and document clear and comprehensive business requirements, ensuring a deep understanding of their needs and objectives.
- Evaluate existing business processes and workflows to identify opportunities for improvement, streamlining, and automation, while maintaining alignment with university objectives.
- Analyse data to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for data-driven decision-making and provide recommendations for data management and utilisation.
- Work with cross-functional teams to design IT solutions, applications, and systems that address identified business requirements, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and university standards.
- Create detailed and accurate documentation, including business requirement specifications, use cases, and process flow diagrams, to support solution development and ensure clarity for all stakeholders.
- Act as a liaison between IT and business units, maintaining open and effective communication to manage expectations, resolve issues, and provide regular project updates.
- Provide input into and support change management strategies to ensure a smooth transition for end-users when new IT solutions are introduced or processes are modified.
Skills and Experience
- Proficiency in analysing complex business processes and data, with the ability to identify opportunities for improvement and make data-driven recommendations.
- A deep understanding of university operations, academic processes, and administrative functions, coupled with the ability to translate these into effective IT solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the capacity to build rapport and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, from end-users to technical teams.
- Proven experience in creating clear and comprehensive documentation, including business requirement specifications, use cases, and process flow diagrams.
- Familiarity with change management principles and experience in developing strategies for smooth transitions when implementing IT solutions and process improvements.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills and proven capacity to exercise initiative, flexibility and to be proactive in development of robust solutions to problems.
- Basic Project Management skills to support the project delivery team in a successful outcome.
- Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
