This Criminal Lawyer role will be based out of our Lilydale office, however on most days travel to various courts will be required. The successful applicant will gain excellent experience being mentored by a senior Criminal Lawyer and work in a positive and supportive team environment.
The role will require the following key skills:
- Experience Required: This role would be perfect for a law graduate completing their PLT requirements. We want to train someone from the ground up!
- Advocacy Skills: the job will require daily Court appearance work in the Magistrates’ Court and Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal. The successful applicant will be required to advocate strongly and persuasively on behalf of our clients in a range of different hearings including Pleas, Bail Applications, Contest Mention and Intervention Order matters etc.
- Communication Skills: In this role you will need to communicate effectively with clients who come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have diverse and complex needs. You will also need to demonstrate your ability to communicate with prosecutions and other key stake holders. The role will consist of a standard file load, and you will be expected to take instructions, provide advice, maintain client contact, promote the client’s interests in dispute resolution discussions with Victoria Police and also liaise effectively with Court Coordinators and Registry staff. You will also instruct Counsel and medical practitioners for psychologist reports.
- Time Management Skills: Excellent time management skills are a must, as you efficiently juggle both court commitments and file work commitments.
- Work Ethic: The characteristics we most value in an applicant are a proven strong work ethic and “can do” attitude.
It will be necessary for you to have the ability to travel to different courts and appear via Webex (drivers licence essential). You may occasionally need to work from our Berwick, Reservoir, or Melbourne CBD offices to see clients.
