FACT are offering a number of full time/part time/casual opportunities, a perfect option for a lawyer or lawyers looking to job share or who are returning from extended leave or wanting to work school hours. This position would also suit a lawyer or lawyers looking to transition to retirement or seeking a break from file work for a temporary period. Advice work will give you a break from the demands of file work with the assurance that you will not only retain but enhance your skills.

As the advice service is not limited to face-to-face clients the role can be a little more flexible and can be performed from a remote or regional area within QLD as long as there is reliable and efficient internet / phone service available and you are able to attend at regional Legal Aid Office as required.

Why the First Advice Contact Team

Legal Aid Queensland's First Advice Contact Team provides free legal advice across criminal, civil and family law to more than 48,000 people each year. Make a difference to the lives of Queenslanders through providing high-quality legal advice to some of the state's most vulnerable and disadvantaged. The work is challenging and complex but rewarding. Enjoy a work life balance not usually experienced in the legal profession.

What you will do:

  • Provide legal advice and information across Family, Domestic Violence, Criminal and Civil areas of law to clients and the public around the state by phone, videoconference and face-to-face
  • Explain people's legal options and refer them to other agencies when needed
  • Provide minor assistance, such as preparing letters and submissions
  • Provide advice to Legal Aid Queensland staff about merit assessments for grants of aid. This includes completing a checklist, determining each matter's likely success and recommending whether a client is eligible to receive aid for legal representation.

The successful candidate can;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of law and procedure across: an area/areas of law covered by the FACT advice service. You must have proven post admission experience providing advice in these areas.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with team members, as well as work independently and/or remotely to meet operational targets.
  • Communicate in a clear, concise and articulate manner in both oral and written formats and can communicate effectively and present to external stakeholders.
  • Deal with clients with complex needs in stressful situations.
