Form of work 24th January, 2024 About the team Our Native Title and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practice is led by partner Jenny Humphris, a recognised leading lawyer in Native Title and cultural heritage law. Holding Redlich represents respondent parties in most of the Native Title claims in Queensland and NSW. We regularly provide advice to local governments, government corporations, developers, pastoral holders, and other public and private entities as respondent parties to Native Title claims and on the Native Title and cultural heritage compliance implications of government and private infrastructure projects. Our team forms part of the firm’s broader Property and Planning Practice and works with other practice groups. About the role The team undertakes a wide range of work, and as a lawyer in our team, you can expect to gain exposure to a broad variety of work, including: Advising our clients on legislative requirements and compliance options relating to Native Title and cultural heritage; Appearing in Federal court-convened mediations and case management hearings; Undertaking due diligence and assessment advice, and Drafting and assisting with the negotiations of indigenous land use agreements and cultural heritage agreements. This is an opportunity to practice in an evolving and challenging area of law under the mentorship of an experienced practitioner. There are excellent pathway programs and opportunities to gain experience in the broader planning and property practice. About you Whilst experience in Native Title law would be beneficial, we are also interested to hear from those with a genuine passion to practice in this area. The ideal candidate will possess some, if not all, of the following: 1 - 4 years PAE An understanding of Native Title and cultural heritage legislation. Be comfortable working closely with clients and Traditional Owners. Be interested in solving novel legal issues. Capable of juggling multiple matters and prioritising effectively. Have the ability or desire to run with matters with the assistance of a partner, as required. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Self-driven and able to meet deadlines. Willingness to undertake pro-bono work, as required. Enjoy working in a team environment. Travel, when necessary, for meetings or on-country court appearances.
