Your new role
As Legal Counsel in this 3-month temporary position, you will play a critical role in steering the legal direction of our organisation. Your responsibilities will encompass:- Providing comprehensive legal advice and support across various domains, such as contracts, commercial law, statutory interpretation, water law, property law, planning and environmental law, and administrative law, contributing significantly to the business’s strategic and operational success.
- Maintaining and supporting a suite of legal precedents for organisational use, ensuring efficient and standardised legal processes.
- Offering strategic insights on dispute resolution and litigation, aiming to protect the organisation's best interests while promoting opportunities for continuous improvement in business operations.
- Independently managing complex or sensitive legal matters and supporting the Legal & Governance team as per the directives of the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary.
- Providing authoritative legal advice to leadership teams and employees on a wide range of legal issues, excluding employment and industrial relations.
- Supporting the development and maintenance of legal precedents, tools, and guidance.
- Acting as the organisation’s solicitor in litigation matters, demonstrating strategic thinking and professional judgement.
What you'll need to succeed
The ideal candidate will possess:- Advanced capabilities in critical thinking, communication with influence, stakeholder and relationship management, and delivering results, with intermediate skills in change agility and decision-making.
- A strong foundation in legal expertise, specifically in statutory interpretation, property law, administrative law, and civil procedure.
- A minimum of 4 years of post-admission experience in similar roles, ideally within the construction and/or government sectors, with demonstrated experience in contract law, litigation, and regulatory/administrative law.
- Experience in briefing external legal service providers and leading process improvement initiatives.
- A tertiary qualification in Law.
- Admission to practice as an Australian legal practitioner under the relevant legal profession legislation.
