about the role

Chevron Australia has an exciting opportunity for a Legal Counsel / Senior Legal Counsel to join the Legal team. Reporting to the Managing Counsel, this permanent role will be based in Chevron's new building at One The Esplanade.

This position is in Chevron's Capital Projects Law Group located in Perth, Western Australia. Chevron's Capital Projects Law Group is a specialized construction-law practice group within Chevron's Law Function's Procurement, Construction & Digital Contracting (PCDC) Law Group. The PCDC Law Group includes counsel located in Houston, Texas, San Ramon, California, London, U.K., and Perth, Western Australia. This position will provide legal support for Capital Projects throughout Chevron with emphasis on supporting Chevron Australia, which operates the Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG and domestic gas projects, and other Chevron international projects. Chevron is one of the world's leading integrated energy companies and has been present in Australia for 70 years and continues to advance Chevron's enterprise projects portfolio in both traditional hydrocarbon energy and Chevron renewables.

This position will suit an experienced legal professional looking for exposure to an international business operating world-class assets and provide an array of legal services supporting primarily Chevron's Capital Projects Function in Australia and elsewhere. The Senior Legal Counsel reports to the Managing Counsel - Procurement, Construction & Digital Contracting (PCDC) Law Group.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing high-quality, effective legal services supporting capital projects for: onshore and offshore oil and gas developments; various processing facilities (e.g., LNG and domestic gas plants and refineries); Chevron New Energies' renewable projects; transportation; power; and pipelines.

  • Working in a team environment and communicating effectively across broad functional and organizational lines.

  • Advising clients on contracting and negotiation strategy.

  • Providing client and project-management teams with ongoing, project-related advice and counsel on legal concepts, contract terms, corporate policies, and claims.

  • Working closely with Chevron's subject matter experts in tax, intellectual property, compliance, environmental, insurance, and project management to integrate contractual terms within a comprehensive risk management structure.

  • Drafting complex engineering and construction contracts from conceptual engineering phase through project commissioning, including front-end engineering and design (FEED); detailed engineering; construction management; fabrication; procurement; transportation; site preparation; installation; and commissioning.

  • Negotiating contract terms and conditions for various engineering, construction, fabrication, installation, and management services as well as for procurement of goods.

  • Advising clients and law management of risk profiles for negotiated contracts.

  • Participating in negotiation and drafting of change orders and other contract modifications.

  • Providing counsel regarding key principles of risk management within major construction environment.

  • Providing counsel regarding general principles of insurance contracts, underwriting of construction risks, and claims management.

  • Effectively managing multi-jurisdictional legal issues and providing guidance on applicable laws impacting engineering and construction activities in multiple jurisdictions.

  • Participating in or leading in-house educational seminars related to engineering and construction contracting.

  • Working as one global team with a wide range of internal stakeholders and subject matter experts to achieve business results.

Required Qualifications:

  • Law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) and admission as a legal practitioner in good standing with the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia or eligible to become so.

  • At least 8 years of directly related experience with primary legal responsibility for a range of construction projects.

  • Working knowledge of construction law and issues related to indemnity, international and multi-party contract principles, construction liability, and attendant risks.

  • High ethical standards and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Proven ability to deliver outstanding results following The Chevron Way.

  • Ability to draft, negotiate, and provide legal advice concerning major service and purchase contracts for large construction projects, as well as provide Legal Counsel and guidance relating to construction-related claims.

  • Ability to write and negotiate major multi-party agreements.

  • A strong foundation in either construction and capital projects management work, energy & resources, and/or power generation and renewables.

  • Capability and demonstrated experience in any of HSE, decommissioning, energy transition, and dispute resolution will be highly regarded.

  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment as part of a high-performing team, with excellent communication skills and ability to build effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • This position requires domestic and international travel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Qualities of a highly motivated self-starter capable of working in a team environment and collaborating with clients, other in-house counsel, outside counsel, and staff.

  • Ability to work in a demanding and often fast-paced international setting.

  • Attention to detail and ability to complete projects in timely fashion and see that others are also on schedule.

  • Knowledge of the energy business.

  • Ability to mentor and counsel other Chevron attorneys as required.
