The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) is Australia's independent expert regulator for health and safety, structural integrity, well integrity and environmental management for all offshore energy operations and greenhouse gas storage activities in Commonwealth waters, and in coastal waters where regulatory powers and functions have been conferred.
NOPSEMA also administers the functions of the Offshore Infrastructure Regulator (OIR), for the offshore renewables industry. This includes the regulation of work health and safety, infrastructure integrity, and environmental management for offshore renewable energy infrastructure activities.

NOPSEMA is recruiting an experienced Legal Counsel to join its Legal, Governance and Risk Team based in our Perth Office.

Please note this recruitment process will be valid for a period of 18 months and may be used to fill ongoing and non-ongoing positions within the Australian Public Service at this level or similar that arise over the 18 month period. Part time or job share applicants may be considered.
The key duties of the position include
The role requires a candidate that is experienced in providing legal advice and making decisions as the authorised officer in relation to the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth) (FOI Act) or similar legislation.
In the role you will be responsible for responding to requests in compliance with the FOI Act and within statutory deadlines. You will also be required to provide high quality and timely legal advice in relation to NOPSEMA's operations generally, including statutory interpretation, administrative law and regulatory enforcement.
The successful candidate will be admitted to practice as an Australian Legal Practitioner and the holder of a current practising certificate. You should also be a strong team player, with the flexibility to shift tasks and manage priorities to deliver on operational needs. An understanding of the offshore and onshore oil and gas industry and the regulatory regime would be an advantage.
