Job description

The Northern Rivers Community Legal Centre (NRCLC) is recruiting for a Legal Information Officer for up to 35 hours per week. 

NRCLC has grown from a free legal service to a centre that offers wrap around support to clients and communities which includes the Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service (WDVCAS), the Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Service (TAAS), the Disaster Recovery and Response Team and Social Work Team.

The position is banded at SCHADS 5 with a salary range of $71,320.22 to $76,477.39 per annum pro rata (dependent upon qualifications, skills and experience), plus superannuation and leave loading. PBI Salary Packaging is also available.

About the Centre

The Centre is an independent community organisation providing legal and related support services throughout the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. The Centre operates Community Legal Services, a Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service, a Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service and Disaster Response and Recovery. The Centre offers services across the Bundjalung, Yaegl and Gumbaynggirr Nations. The organisation has a central office in Lismore and an office in Murwillumbah. The Centre also provides extensive outreach services across the region.

The Centre offers legal and related support services including information, referral, strategic casework and advice, advocacy, community education and community development, and law reform.

The Legal Information Officer provides information and referral for The Centre clients both over the phone and face to face. The Legal Information Officer is also responsible for front desk administration including intake and managing a triage system. You will be required to work in a dynamic work environment with the ability to be flexible and appropriately responsive to a range of clients with varying needs. You will be required to undertake various administrative roles and manage all aspects of the client database.  This position is advertised for the Centre's Lismore Office. The Centre prioritises its work with First Nations communities and clients.

Key Accountabilities

Information and Referral

  • Respond to telephone, front of office and general enquiries.
  • Manage intake and triage systems for legal service, disaster recovery and tenants’ advice and advocacy services.
  • Provide information and referrals, update information as required and manage appointments and calendars.

Administration

  • Manage mail/email systems.
  • Manage client administration systems.
  • Manage key aspects of client database (Actionstep).
  • Undertake all necessary file work, reporting, archiving and other administrative requirements.

People and Culture

  • Contribute to a collaborative, positive and respectful Centre-wide team approach and participate in team related activities.
  • Provide in- house training for staff and volunteers (as required).
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including workplace health and safety and equal employment opportunity.

General

Perform other duties and activities to assist The Centre in achieving its strategic intent/goals as requested.

Key Relationships

The Legal Information Officer reports directly to the Principal Solicitor. The Information Officer works collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team and works effectively with clients and service providers.


Selection Criteria

  1. Proven experience with administrative, reception and the provision of information and referral preferably in a community legal organisation.
  2. A demonstrated commitment to social justice. 
  3. Experience working with, and understanding of, the needs of target client groups, including women experiencing or at risk of domestic and family violence and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and communities. 
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated capacity to work within multi-disciplinary teams to ensure collaborative work practices. 
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with diverse client groups. 
  6. Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office suite of programs
  7. A current working with children check or ability to obtain.

Desirable

  1. Demonstrated knowledge pertaining to the issues pertaining to family and domestic violence and a commitment to social justice,
  2. Current Driver’s Licence and ability to travel.
