The School
Brisbane Grammar School is a non-denominational boys’ school of about 1800 students (Years 5 to12) overlooking the Brisbane CBD. The School maintains a 150-year strong tradition of academic excellence, extensive cocurricular activities and student wellbeing programs. We are fortunate to have a team of dedicated and professional staff who provide an exceptional learning environment responsive to the needs of our students.  


Position Objective

The primary objective of this role is to provide a high-quality facilities maintenance service to the School’s buildings, and grounds of Brisbane Grammar School (BGS) at an excellent standard to enable the delivery of exceptional educational outcomes in a safe and healthy environment to be delivered in a customer focused manner, with the least inconvenience to students, and staff. To work cohesively as a team and attend to the many scheduled School events and set ups.

Workplace, Health and Safety

  • Understanding and implementing the employees and employers WH&S Obligation.
  • Ensure uncompromised compliance with the BGS Child Protection Policy & Child Risk Management Strategy.
  • Correct use of plant and machinery.
  • Attend Mandatory safety ’tool box talks’ conducted by The School’s WH&S team.
  • Hazards are routinely identified and rectified/reported to the Maintenance Foreman.
  • Have the full capability and understanding to apply Workplace Health & Safety Standards in relation all the relevant maintenance departments functions, operations and procedures (use of correct signage, PPE, manual handling).
  • To have viewed, read, and understood all The School Policies and procedures.

Facilities Maintenance 

  • The School’s facilities, building and grounds are maintained at a high standard that reflects the Schools reputation of excellence.
  • Ability to priorities daily and weekly maintenance works, in conjunction with other operational needs of the School, (scheduled sets and events).
  • Any maintenance works or projects are carried out, efficiently, cost effectively, and to the standards expected.
  • Working with and alongside the School’s sub-contractors.
  • Liaison with other trades as the needs arise.
  • Repair and maintenance work as required to the School’s residencies, and other off campus facilities.

Team Work 

  • Supports productive working relationships.
  • Ability to carry out maintenance works, with limited supervision, and cooperatively participate as a team member when required.

Venue Logistics

  • School facilities are made available in accordance with required specifications, in accordance with the approved Social Activities Diary process.
  • Assistance is provided with any on campus traffic control, and visitor parking on the School's Ovals.

School Vehicles

  • The Safe use of School vehicles both on and off campus.
  • The School is a highly pedestrianized precinct, staff must abide by all the speed restriction and signs.
  • Pedestrians take priority whilst driving on campus.
  • Staff must abide by road rules whilst driving off campus and be courteous to other drivers and pedestrians.
  • Vehicles must be signed out and in by the driver.
  • All defect and repairs must be reported immediately to the maintenance Forman or facilities manager.

Security 

  • The School's campuses are kept secure at all time.
  • Awareness of the need for security in relation to rooms and buildings, personal property and equipment.
  • To be vigilant in questioning any person on campus who doesn’t appear to have links with the School.
  • To ensure grounds sheds, machinery, and chemicals are securely locked.
  • The BGS Child Protection Policy & Child Risk Management Strategy is complied with at all times.

General Conduct

  • Act at all times in accordance with the BGS Code of Conduct.
  • Act in accordance with BGS policies and procedures.
  • Comply with the BGS Workplace Health and Safety system and procedures.

Compliance

  • Compliance with applicable regulations.
  • All key tasks described in this Duty Statement are performed in compliance with any applicable government regulation and School policy.
  • Compliance with Heritage listing regulations as they pertain to the maintenance and modification of the School’s Heritage listed structures.
  • The School’s Asbestos Register is to be referred to, if in doubt seek clarification from the maintenance foreman, or facilities manager.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • To have a minimum five years’ experience in a carpentry or Joinery trade (provide a minimum of two references).
  • A thorough understanding of MSDS in relation to the safe use of all chemical and substances related to the role.
  • The ability to respond to changing demands of the post and the operational needs of the School.
  • Ability to prioritise work and manage time effectively.
  • Courteous and respectable to the Grammar Community.
  • Consistent, punctual, and reliable.
  • Effective communication skills both written and verbally.

Essential Digital Skills

  • Basic computer skill to access the School’s leave requests, payslip & timesheet program.

Personal Attributes

  • Ethically sound with uncompromising integrity.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Well-presented and customer focused.

Qualifications

  • Have completed, and hold a relevant trade Qualification.
  • To have an open QLD car license.
  • Hold or eligible for a positive notice and a blue card through the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.
  • Provide documents for full-time working rights in Australia.
