Job description

Who is AEMO?

We are the Australian Energy Market Operator. AEMO’s role is to design and operate a sustainable energy system that provides safe, reliable, and affordable electricity and gas today, and to enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. All Australian governments are now committed to a net-zero economy for Australia by 2050, the first step of which is a net-zero energy system. We are collaborating with industry and other stakeholders to engineer electricity grids that can handle 100 per cent instantaneous renewable generation by 2025. AEMO also plays a significant role in the east coast gas market, which has recently expanded to assessing if there is enough natural gas for customers, including electricity generators. The transition to a renewable energy system is occurring at a world-leading pace. It is an exciting, momentous time to be part of this mission.

About The Role

The Forecasting Department is responsible for the development of strategic insights and decision-making support for electricity and gas stakeholders in transitioning the economy towards net zero emissions by 2050. The Market Operability team facilitates this by providing assessments of the future capability of the power system and gas market to operate in a reliable, secure and deliver energy affordability to consumers, including assessments of 100% renewable energy operation. This is a critical function, as it directly influences the development needs of the NEM, WEM and gas market to support a transition to net zero emissions.

The Market Operability Manager is accountable for the development and delivery of assessments of the future operability of the East Coast Gas market and National Electricity Market, considering the energy market transition that is underway, and the forecast challenges that may eventuate across a range of alternative development futures.

This analysis is designed to validate and verify investment advice to support this transition, supporting planning advice regarding the investment needs to maintain a secure and operable power system, and to demonstrate the adequacy of the gas system to deliver available gas supplies to gas consumers. This is provided through delivery of statutory functions and reporting including the delivery of the Gas Statement of Opportunities, support of the Integrated System Plan, and jurisdictional and joint-planning analysis to deliver quantitative insights to support operational and planning purposes.

What you will be doing

Accountability for GSOO delivery and coordination, including supply and adequacy assessments, and publication support

Provide detailed electricity modelling of the operational requirements of the electricity system to a 30-minute granularity, across a short, medium, and long-term horizon up to 30 years ahead.

Modelling, reporting and stakeholder engagement on the operability of the Integrated System Plan, and broader analysis to underpin system security assessments, such as system strength and inertia analyses

Extreme event case studies to support resilience decision making, particularly regarding weather impacts on available renewable energy resources, and risks in a high penetration renewable energy grid regarding energy management challenges

Contribute to the development and implementation of Departmental and Divisional Strategies and Plans, and team initiatives that support these strategies

What you will bring to the role

Significant industry or related experience in gas and/or electricity systems at a management level in a complex, multi-disciplinary environment, and a passion for the development of the energy industry

Detailed knowledge of the political, legal, and regulatory framework in which the energy industry operates

Knowledge of market modelling techniques and optimisations of electricity and gas systems, the changing energy landscape that will influence the net zero transition, energy economics and power system fundamentals affecting investment considerations of generation, transmission and other alternatives. Experience with relevant modelling software such as PLEXOS would be beneficial

Experience leading and managing geographically dispersed teams

Appropriate tertiary and/or postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline (for example operations research, economics, statistics, data science)

Some of our employment benefits

•    Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
•    Professional development via projects, assignments, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and formal learning
•    A full health and wellbeing program, discounted health insurance, gym membership and other concessions
