To reach the next level of productivity improvement and establish the Aluminium business of the future, Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) needs to further leverage its position; with respect of its Gladstone assets, Pacific Operations relies on a consistent ongoing supply of energy in order to sustain production of aluminium at the Boyne Smelter (BSL). Accordingly, the Gladstone Power Station (GPS) is a critical asset in reliably meeting the energy demands for BSL and Queensland more broadly. The well established Joint Venture has been set up to ensure that the interests of the customers, suppliers and operator are well managed.
We are looking for a Manager – GPS Joint Venture, to be part of the Pacific Operations Decarbonisation and Energy Team. This role works closely with the Operator of the Gladstone Power Station and all Owners in the Joint Venture (JV), while ensuring that the JV is managed successfully and meets Rio Tinto’s obligations under JV arrangements.
Leading the Principal Advisor – GPS Joint Venture, and reporting to the General Manager Decarbonisation, you will:
- Use your well developed stakeholder management and influencing skills to effectively manage the relationships between Joint Venture participants, customers, external agencies and the regulator
- Support the development of the GPS Strategy and driving strategic initiatives forward while influencing to ensure that outcomes from the 5-year plan are delivered
- Support GPS coal procurement and rail freight agreements
- Support the coordination of Joint Venture meetings and the development of board papers, updates and proposals for approval
- Prepare and manage the annual plan and budget as the JV Manager
- Undertake regular reporting to GPS Participants on the financial and operational aspects of the station, including monthly reports to the Joint Venture participants
- Manage relationship with external agencies, regulators and other agreement stakeholders on behalf of the Operator and the Joint Venture participants to negotiate and ensure agreements remain up to date and fit for purpose
As the Manager - GPS Joint Venture, you will develop solutions for complex business problems that involve multiple parties with competing objectives, inside a dynamic market and regulatory environment. You will utilise deep analysis, negotiation and persuasion to recommend solutions to senior management and owners, through consultation with interested parties. With this in mind, your strong conceptual and analytical thinking, exceptional communication, stakeholder engagement skills, and deep understanding of governance processes, will see you excel in this position. You will also demonstrate:

- Proven leadership experience
- A university education is preferred but not essential – a Bachelor’s degree with a significant commercial component (e.g. commerce, economics, finance or law) or Engineering
- Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, and a good team player with the ability to interact effectively as a leader or team member
- Proven negotiation and influencing skills, coupled with the ability to analyse and communicate complex business problems within diverse stakeholder groups
- A high level of initiative, a strategic mindset and a focus on continuous improvement
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, in particular Excel and PowerPoint

This opportunity will be based in either Brisbane or Gladstone, Queensland. Should you be based in Brisbane, monthly travel to Gladstone will be required. Give our internationally based JV partners, you will also be provided the opportunity to travel to Japan on an annual basis.
