About the opportunity

A position exists for a permanent, full-time Hospital Scientist in a dynamic and well-established Cytology laboratory. This is an opportunity to be a part of a broad network of laboratories across NSW, creating better health outcomes for our patients.

The Cytology Laboratory is located within a section of the Department of Tissue Pathology and Diagnostic Oncology at the ICPMR, Westmead Hospital as part of the NSW Health Pathology network.

What you'll be doing

Responsible for delivering a range of operational laboratory activities including the coordination and provisions of scientific and technical training and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.

Apply now by addressing the following questions: * Bachelor Degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science/Biomedical Science or equivalent, with Cytology or Cytology related subjects as well as the Certificate of Cytotechnology (Australian Society of Cytology) or a commitment to preparing for and obtaining the CT(ASC). Academic transcripts to be provided with application.
  • Knowledge and experience in a routine diagnostic Cytology Laboratory with some demonstrable cytology skills, which may include specimen preparation, the reporting of cytology specimens and fine needle aspiration procedure attendance for rapid on-site evaluation of samples for adequacy and triage.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with clinical, laboratory and support staff and accurate evaluation of patient clinical information and relevant documentation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and development, as well as a high level of initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work responsibly and efficiently, as a collaborative team member whilst working autonomously, to deliver results within specified timeframes, manage competing priorities and contribute to a range of diagnostic skills relevant to the laboratory.
  • Sound decision making capability, attention to detail and problem solving skills as well as an ability to apply established principles, investigate and resolve issues within the laboratory environment.
  • Commitment to quality and customer service improvement, maintaining flexibility to meet service and patient needs.
  • Commitment to understanding legislative, policy, procedure and accreditation requirements that impact laboratory operation, patient and staff health and wellbeing.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases
This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

All NSW Health workers are required to have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, as defined by NSW Health. Employees working in a clinical area or are required to attend clinical areas are considered category A. Category A positions are required to provide evidence of having received three doses of COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (TGA) and meet the requirements of the . You will be required to provide a record of your COVID-19 vaccination status if successful.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
