At Nepean Hospital there is a dedicated team responsible for management of all patients with acute surgical conditions within the hospital itself as well as the neighbouring hospitals with the NBMLHD, known as the Acute Surgical Unit. ASU is an independent unit that manages all acute surgical admissions including trauma and is led by an on-site ASU Consultant during daylight hours and on-call overnight, responsible for management of all patients with acute surgical conditions.
What you'll be doing
- Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in the Unit, and ensuring that the admission and plans are documented in the medical record.
- Coordinating and documenting the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted to his/her Unit within the public health organisation.
- Day-to-day assessment and management of the patients in the Unit under supervision of the consultant in charge/fellow.
- Communicating and coordinating care with their team, arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate, arranging discharge and liaising with local medical officers and other community based care modalities.
- Participating in the after- hours roster to provide timely review of surgical patients requiring reviews as per Nepean Hospital policy.
- SRMOs in General Surgery will work in the Acute Surgical Unit to provide a 24/7 service within Nepean Hospital.
- All terms will be three months and each SRMO will rotate. A minimum of 26 weeks of general surgery will be allocated with an opportunity to rotate to an ICU term.
- Nepean Hospital has its own night surgical trainees. These trainees are on-ground, working 1900-0700 shifts 7 days on - 7 days off. SRMOs working within the ASU will be rostered at some time for both in-hours shifts and after-hours shifts concurrent with the night surgical trainee.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Recent relevant clinical experience required to undertake the key accountabilities for this role including completion of two years postgraduate experience by the commencement of employment in this role.
- This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
- Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
- To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
- Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position. The applicant must be registered with General Registration and worked in an Australian Hospital during the previous 2 years.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
- Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development, self-education and commitment to relevant training program.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
