The Role
As part of a team delivering high quality services in accordance with Agency policies, legal requirements and relevant professional competencies, the Medical Scientist in Charge (Microbiology) will provide high level support to the Medical Director of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases along with managing a major pathology discipline in the THO-South.
Facilitate the delivery of Microbiology Department objectives and provide expert professional leadership to a team of scientists and technicians involved in the provision of specialised and routine microbiology laboratory services in a major tertiary referral hospital. Under the broad direction of Director, Microbiology & Infectious Disease, at both statewide and regional levels, deliver complex and critical diagnostic services to the Department’s clients.
Coordinate projects. with considerable autonomy, and limited direction in both the laboratory and clinical areas and provide expert professional knowledge, technical and policy advice and resolve novel, complex and critical issues.
You will be responsible for:
- Supervision, planning, coordination, organisation and administration of the scientific and technical activities of the laboratory. Determine the strategic direction to be undertaken by the department and participate in Quality Control and Assurance programs.
- Ensure the areas of the laboratory are in compliance with accreditation agencies and appropriate legislation and all results leaving the laboratory have been subjected to acceptable verification procedures.

Details of Appointment
Permanent, full time day worker (with on-call) position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.
*notwithstanding hours may be negotiated with the successful applicant

Salary
$145,301 - $147,192 per annum + our Employer 11% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
You’ll have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Professional Development Allowance of up to $1000 per annum
- Salary range is in accordance with Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement No.2 of 2022
Eligibility
Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:
- Satisfactory completion of an appropriate course of study* at a recognised tertiary institution Tertiary qualification/program of study in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Science or Applied Science or equivalent suitable to the position from a recognised institution.
- Eligible for membership with a relevant professional body such as Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists, Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, The Australian Society for Microbiology, Human Genetics Society of Australasia or the Australian Society of Cytology.
- A relevant post graduate qualification along with at least 8 years specialised experience.
Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:
- Significant experience in a diagnostic bacteriology laboratory
- Relevant post graduate qualification e.g., PHD, FAIMS/FASM or MSc
