- Full-time position (0.5 Medication Safety, 0.5 Clinical Pharmacist) with part-time and job share arrangements considered
About the facility
The Pharmacy Department is staffed by 120 EFT staff across the acute site (University Hospital Geelong), the rehabilitation and aged care site (McKellar Centre) and the private hospital (St John of God). The staffing consists of 76 EFT pharmacists, 6 pre-registration pharmacists and support staff. The Department provides clinical pharmacy services, aseptic and oncology preparation, HITH and outpatient services. A high degree of specialisation exists in clinical pharmacy roles, clinical trials, Medication Safety, medicines information, antimicrobial stewardship and radiopharmacy. Service expansion has included @home pharmacy services.
The Pharmacy Department is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy education and in the medical course at Deakin University. Pharmacy practice research is a focus with local and collaborative projects with universities, particularly Monash University and other healthcare facilities. Staff are supported for continuing education and postgraduate studies. The SHPA residency program is offered.
The Pharmacy is innovative in its approach to practice with electronic discharge prescribing and a robotic dispensing and inventory system and pharmacy @home program expanding. Quality use of medicines and Medication Safety activities are led by pharmacy across campuses. Pharmacy technicians support Clinical Pharmacists and undertake sterile and oncology preparation. The Beth Allerton Family Oncology Pharmacy provides a dedicated facility for chemotherapy preparation, clinical trials, outpatient dispensing and patient counselling within the Cancer Centre.
About the role
Undertake and develop your skill set in a range of hospital pharmacy settings within Barwon Health.
Responsibilities include:
- Working alongside the Lead Medication Safety Pharmacist to ensure monitoring, compliance and ongoing improvement is achieved towards the actions required in NSQHS Standard 4.
- Monitoring, disseminating, developing and implementing action plans in response to medication errors, safety alerts, legislative changes and new or updated jurisdictional guidelines.
- Undertaking audit, writing reports, developing and reviewing policies and procedures and providing staff education.
- Participating in Medication Safety and quality use of medicine initiatives from Safer Care Victoria, the Vic TAG QUM group, SHPA and other relevant bodies.
- Performing the functions of the Medication Safety Committee.
- Ensure appropriate drug utilization through implementation of hospital policy and formulary guidelines/restrictions, and through liaison with medical and nursing staff.
- Participate in appropriate ward rounds and planning meetings.
- Participate in the intern and student programs.
- Initiate and participate in clinical pharmacy research projects and present at professional conferences, where appropriate.
- Assist team members in delivering a clinical pharmacy service
- Ensure all work is complete accurately on time and in accordance with Barwon Health policies and procedures

About you
Essential;
- Registered as a pharmacist with AHPRA
- Relevant Masters postgraduate qualification are completed or are being pursued with commitment
- Hospital pharmacy experience with clinical or project experience
- Experience or special interest in Medication Safety or Quality Use of Medicines
Desirable;
- Skills in change management, building sustainable change and human factors engineering
- Familiar with relevant state and national policies and tools that facilitate Medication Safety and QUM
