Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) is the national body representing over 15,000 members in the speech pathology profession. SPA supports and regulates the ethical, clinical and professional standards of its members as well as lobbying and advocating on behalf of all Australians living with communication and swallowing difficulties.

The purpose of the Member Engagement Officer position is to support volunteer activities and uplift and promote volunteer engagement. SPA’s volunteers provide significant value to SPA and this role aims to promote a strategic and consistent approach to supporting volunteers in the branches. This role is the central point of contact for volunteer support. The position is Melbourne office based with WFH opportunities.

Key responsibilities

Support rollout of engagement strategy

  • Develop and maintain information regarding volunteer roles and responsibilities and support the recruitment of volunteer members.
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of terms of reference, handbooks and relevant policies and procedures for volunteer activities including branch and working groups.

Oversee Branches

  • Support and assist Branches with all their activities, including coordination of Branch events and measure engagement outcomes for these events.
  • Coordinate Branches digital document management systems and ensure all documents are stored and available for subsequent Executives.
  • Liaison relating to projects that are happening at National Office and what is happening within the Branches.
  • Coordinate Branch Executive nomination and recruitment processes including onboarding and offboarding of Branch Executives.
  • Mapping of members/ creating regions to give a breakdown of membership in each Branch.
  • Drive membership engagement, through proactive outreach and initiatives.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to member inquiries and requests.
  • Assist members, ensuring a smooth experience.
  • Provide input and lead changes to SPA Member Engagement activities, including the implementation or changes of current processes.
  • Support volunteers to identify and carry out activities to assist with the annual planning (ie nomination forms) and budget preparations.
  • Develop and regularly update identified templates and other resources to support events/ activities and support key tasks associated with running events.
  • Develop and maintain systems to monitor effectiveness of and engagement with all volunteer activities and implement improvement in a proactive manner
  • Support Branches and working groups to use systems such as Sharepoint and ensure that all these documents on these shared platforms are reviewed and kept up to date and shared.

Promote volunteer engagement

  • Review and implement best practice onboarding processes for new SPA volunteers tailored to each volunteer group.
  • Develop systems and monitor the effectiveness of and engagement with all activities to assist with future event planning. Collate and share information with identified stakeholders.
  • Support advertising of volunteer roles and the creation/ updating of position descriptions.
  • Implement a meaningful volunteer recognition program and support the recognition and reward of volunteers and leaders around activities such as involvement in branches and networks/committees.
  • Support development of training of volunteers as required for identified activities.

Essential:

  • Proven experience in a volunteer / member coordination position preferably within a membership association
  • Exceptional customer service skills, demonstrated through prompt, clear, and professional communication
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to influence others to complete work tasks.
  • High level of communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
  • Good initiative and independent problem solving capability.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Competent in using Word, Excel and Sharepoint.

Desirable:

  • Previous event management experience
  • Previous experience volunteering on or running committees or communities of practice.
