We currently have casual opportunities available to join the St John WA team as a Mental Health Transport Officer (MHTO) in Bunbury.

As a Mental Health Transport Officer, you will be required to assist in the transportation of low to high risk patients, in accordance with transport orders made under the Mental Health Act 2014. St John WA will provide the necessary training and resources to ensure you are best equipped to perform your role!

What you’ll do:

  • Maintaining a safe and secure transfer of low to high-risk patients on transport orders
  • Working with other agencies and team members in the transportation of patients including Paramedics, WA Police, Nurses or Special Constables
  • Treating patients with dignity and respect and use minimal restriction during transport
  • Providing a quality customer experience through well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Maintaining and updating patient records
  • Confirming with the authorised Mental Health practitioner that the patient has been searched prior to transport or conduct searches as required under the Mental Health Act 2014
  • Confirming with the authorised Mental Health practitioner that the patient’s carer or family have been contacted prior to transport
  • Ensuring that St John WA policies, protocols and procedures are adhered to.

What you’ll need:

  • Experience within the pre-hospital setting, working with and transporting patients (highly desirable)
  • Experience within a security related field and an understanding of security principles and laws
  • St John WA volunteer experience (highly desirable)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and within a team environment
  • Effective time management skills
  • Demonstrated experience with conducting investigations and report writing
  • Full Australian Working Rights
  • Hold a current unrestricted "C or CA" Class driver’s license with less than 6 demerit points
  • Willing to obtain a Working with Children’s Card

The following certificates and/or training would also be desirable:

  • A current Provide First Aid certificate ­ - HLTAID011
  • The completion of the Mental Health Act 2014 eLearning module for Transport Officers prepared by the Mental Health Commission (MHC) - Mental Health Act 2014 resources (mhc.wa.gov.au)
  • Training in de-escalation and restraint
  • Current St John volunteer EMT status would allow for interested candidates to take on Ambulance Transport Officer shifts if interested (further eligibility would apply before being able to take these up)
