Mining Superintendent: Longwall

Lead the longwall production team to mine coal safely and efficiently!

Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

As the Longwall Superintendent you will be responsible for managing all aspects of longwall section activities and resources to mine coal safely, optimally and in accordance with the annual mine plan at Aquila Mine. You will work with our industry-leading remotely operated autonomous longwall technology, where our Aquila Mine won the Outstanding Mine Performance category at the 2023 Australian Mining Prospect Awards.

The mine features two longwall systems (walk on, walk off) ensuring production continuity. Both longwalls are fully remote capable from the site-based Remote Operations Centre (ROC) on the surface of the mine. The Longwall Move department is a vital part of this strategy to maintain longwall continuity.

Your key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Lead a core team of operational, maintenance and automation Longwall Coordinators to maintain equipment in accordance with the short-term maintenance plan and drive the team to safely deliver the annual longwall targets and to improve performance
• Lead the longwall team in planning, coordinating all aspects associated with the implementation of longwall move events
• Ensure the department’s full compliance with Qld Coal Mining Safety & Health Act & Regulations and the discharge all obligations identified
• Monitor costs and operational performance of the longwall team to perform within budget
• Build, lead and develop the team to deliver departmental plans and continuous improvement objectives
• Demonstrate a commitment to the zero-harm philosophy with an emphasis on delivering safety improvements and efficiencies
• Ensure compliance with all people, safety, technical, operating and business systems, behaviours and culture in your area
• Collaborate and build strong relationships across a range of both internal and external stakeholders

Deliver on other key performance metrics that will drive performance and results

• Extensive experience working in an underground coal mining environment with a proven track record of managing longwall activities
• Experience in implementing longwall automation systems, remote operating centre (ROC) and bi-directional cutting
• Demonstrated leadership experience within the coal mining industry
• Knowledge of relevant mining legislation and its application
• Supervisor and/or ERZ Controller / Deputy competencies will be highly regarded
• Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills to influence and achieve buy-in from key stakeholders
• An understanding of key safety risks and ways to mitigate them

• Full-time permanent position based at Aquila Mine, Middlemount
• Monday to Friday roster with 9-day fortnight available
