Permanent part-time (24 hours fortnightly), based in Hobart area

Anglicare Tasmania is a non-profit organisation providing a wide range of community services to the people of Tasmania. We are part of the national Anglicare Australia network of organisations. Anglicare advocates for social justice and aids people in times of need. We provide programs relating to health, housing, families, drug and alcohol treatment and support and more.

We have an opportunity for a Needle and Syringe Program Worker to work in the Needle and Syringe Program which aims to provide injecting equipment and information to consumers to minimise the spread of blood-borne viruses (including HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C) amongst people who inject drugs and the wider community. The program aims to reduce the harms associated with injecting drug use and encourage the use of sterile injecting equipment and appropriate disposal of used needles and Syringes.

The successful applicant will:

  • An understanding of the aims and objectives of the NSP program
  • An understanding of Tasmanian drug culture and the issues affecting people who inject drugs
  • Well developed interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills and an ability to engage with consumers in a way that is supportive, respectful and responsive to their needs
  • Comprehensive knowledge regarding safe injecting practices, blood-borne virus transmission, harm reduction, health promotion and other health issues in relation to injecting drug use
  • An awareness of safe Needle and Syringe handling techniques, collection and disposal procedures
  • Knowledge of health and welfare professionals/organisations who provide services relevant to the health and wellbeing needs of NSP consumers
  • An understanding of the importance of maintaining professionalism and ensuring the confidentiality of consumers at all times
  • A proven ability to work constructively as a member of a team and contribute to a supportive working environment
  • Knowledge of Alcohol and Other Drug related policy issues and demonstrated research and analytical skills
  • Sound written communication skills enabling the production of clear, logical and concise documents

The successful applicant will be required to:

  • provide a current Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People Registration (employment/volunteer category) including NDIS Worker Screening Check
  • present an unsupervised contact with children or vulnerable people type National Police Check (no older than 12 months);
  • provide an International Police Check if you have resided for 12 months or more outside of Australia after the age of 16;
  • provide a satisfactory Anglicare-assessed medical:
  • provide a current provisional or full Australian Driver’s Licence.

On commencement the successful applicant will be required to undertake our structured Safeguarding Children Training program.
