In 2024 Hunter New England Local Health District will be opening a Residential Eating Disorders Centre (REDC) - the first of its kind- for NSW. Once the construction is finished, this role will be situated at Charlestown, Lake Macquarie. In the meantime, our temporary location is at Mater Mental Health Centre in Waratah. Charlestown, it is 15km from Newcastle CBD and has good connectivity to community and transport whilst being nestled in a natural bushland setting within a residential area. 

This 12 bed, brand new, purpose- built facility will provide an innovative model of care for people 16 years and over, with an eating disorder in a homelike environment. A skilled multidisciplinary team will provide an intensive program of individual and group interventions, using a rehabilitation framework. Interventions will focus on specialist treatment for Eating Disorders together with addressing psychosocial disruption and overall quality of life.

REDC will be required to function in conjunction with existing specialised tertiary services, with a broad range of stakeholders, both in public and private sectors within Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) and across NSW.

About your new role:

The Nurse Practitioner/Transitional Nurse Practitioner will be a member of the senior clinical care coordination team who will work closely with the manager and medical staff, to provide leadership and governance. The role will provide expertise in the clinical assessment and management of people with Eating Disorders and ensure high quality nursing care is embedded into all aspects of service development and delivery.

This will include:

  • A lead role on the intake care pathway of the service, managing referrals and liaising with other treatment providers, referred clients and their families in such a way as to manage expectations, provide clear and clinically indicated recommendations collaboratively and with an understanding of the individual’s context.
  • Oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing care to the service, whilst ensuring the nursing team is well integrated with the multidisciplinary team in delivering on transdisciplinary aspects of care, therapeutic groups and interventions and creating a positive team culture.
  • Provide leadership and ensure the professional development of less experienced staff to develop skills and expertise applicable in the specialised treatment setting and client group.

Requirements:

  • Current registration with AHPRA.
  • Successful completion of or evidence of working towards a Board-approved Nurse Practitioner qualification at Master's level or education equivalence as determined by the Board and the equivalent of three (3) years' full-time experience in an advanced practice nursing role within the area mental health and/or physical health care, and within
    six (6) years from the date when the completed application seek endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner by the Nursing and Midwifery Board.
  • Eligible to drive in NSW.
