With 850 kilometers of Privately Owned Rail Track that Mackay Sugar own, operate and service, if you’re thinking about a change, it might be time to ‘switch tracks’ and join our team as Rail Network Controller
About this Opportunity:
Right now, we have an opportunity for an Operations Centre Trainer to join our Rail Operations Team. The role is casual, until the end of the crushing season (Approx. December 2024*). Reporting directly to the Transport Operations Superintendent, this is a unique opportunity to experience and learn the overall Transport Operations Function.
What is an Operations Centre Trainee, you might ask? They are responsible for communications between harvesting groups, planners and rail network controllers. This position utilizes Mackay Sugar systems to monitor train movement, deliveries/collection and siding bookings.
This position will develop into a rail network controller who are responsible for the control and supervision of locomotives, and rail mounted equipment movements. They make decisions about when to prioritize and allocate locos and their bins, to our farmers and the relevant mills, to maintain the safe and efficient running of our 850km of cane rail network. This is a fast-paced job that will require you to problem-solve and make quick decisions if, and when issues arise. When they do, it's important the Rail Network Controller can communicate clearly with their team and other contacts to effectively handle any situation.
Once the training program is completed, the trainee will be promoted to a fully qualified Rail Network Coordinator with Mackay Sugar. This promotion comes with a significant pay increase.
About the Training Program:
The training program is designed for a duration of 6 months but can be completed sooner depending on the trainee’s performance. The training program as an estimate will look like:
- 3 months as a Communications Officer. This role requires collaborating with the Rail Network Coordinators, Planners and Harvester Groups to communicate cane transport information to relevant stakeholders. This will give a big picture understanding of Mackay Sugar’s Transport Operations.
- 3 months as a Rail Network Coordinator (Trainee). The successful applicant will then be designated a mentor Rail Network Coordinator which they will shadow until the completion of their training modules and assessments.
