The Foamex Group is an industry leader in lightweight building & packaging products and have been supplying the building and packaging industries since 1982.  We currently have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a hands on, inspirational Operations Manager that is prepared to roll up their sleeves to manage the overall Operations & Maintenance functions at our Foamex-SA plant to ensure Safe, Effective and Efficient manufacturing operations to achieve optimum performance and profitability.

You will be a strong driver of operational productivity and efficiency improvement via the effective leadership and guidance of our production, and maintenance teams. You love to be hands on with a finger on the pulse on everything happening on the shop floor. You thrive under pressure and have a thirst for learning and finding new ways to continuously improve plant, people, and processes to increase productivity, output and your team’s overall performance and engagement.

Reporting to the General Manager Operations who is Melbourne based and leading a team of 4 direct and 20 indirect employees working predominately on a 5-day 1 shift operation the primary responsibilities of this role will be as follows:

  • Develop and maintain a strong “safety first” culture within the Production/ Operations & maintenance teams embedding excellent safety systems and practices in everything we do.
  • Ensure compliance and adherence with all required workplace Safety regulations and Investigate / Report and implement corrective actions for any Safety / Injury / Quality incidents.
  • Work closely with General Manager Operations to set and/or implement policies, procedures, and new systems of work to improve the operation and follow through with their implementation. 
  • Working collaboratively with Sales / Customer Service / Administration teams.
  • Assist Sales department with account management duties and customer visits as required on as needs basis.
  • Ensure there are effective communication practices with all factory floor staff i.e., Toolbox meetings, Operations meetings etc….
  • Establish a multi-skilled workforce that enables effective utilisation of employees across the site.
  • Recruit, select, train, assign, schedule, coach, counsel, and discipline factory production / logistics and maintenance employees as required.
  • Manage and monitor plant Operational expenditure and Sales to ensure Plant profitability targets are met.
  • Develop, drive, and implement Operational Improvement plans to improve plant efficiency and profitability. 
  • Provide required reporting to Head Office Management as and when required.
  • Provide leadership, support, and guidance to Factory Manager to ensure the optimisation of all factory production / logistics operations and overall employee management.
  • Manage and develop Production & Maintenance employees ensuring a positive employment culture, effective training strategies and high retention levels.
  • Provide overall leadership and hands-on guidance/assistance to the Maintenance team to ensure the effective repair and upkeep of all plant Mechanical & Electrical equipment.
  • Develop and coach Maintenance team to better understand the process and technical operation of plant equipment to further improve troubleshooting / repair abilities.
  • Oversee the management of planned, preventative and breakdown maintenance activities to reduce plant downtime through the use of maintenance plans, robust performance measurement tools and ongoing improvement plans to minimise plant equipment downtime.
  • Entrench a culture of continuous improvement within the Production and Maintenance teams.
  • Be the go-to person to resolve and find solutions to plant equipment issues.
  • Lead, Implement & co-ordinate plant equipment capital upgrades to improve plant operations.
  • Manage equipment spare parts planning & procurement.
  • Schedule and monitor any plant contractor maintenance resources used on site.
  • Responsible for the leadership, training and mentoring of all Maintenance personal.

To be considered for this role ideally you must have:

  • Previous experience (10yrs+) managing a fast-paced manufacturing operation involving the effective management of People, Plant, Processes and Procedures to ensure a safe and efficient operation.
  • Previous experience in managing both Production and Maintenance teams is a must.
  • Engineering (Mechanical) Degree and/or Fitter & Turner Trade Qualification will be highly regarded.
  • Prior experience with hands-on fixing and resolving plant equipment issues and not afraid to get hands dirty and have an excellent mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong Ability to multi-task, be self-motivated and work well under pressure.
  • Strong Hands-on People Manager with the ability to motivate, empower and inspire employees to improve performance.
  • High motivation levels and a strong passion for delivering outstanding results.
  • Strong Planning, Organisational, Communication and Decision-making skills.
  • Ability to make decisions within an autonomous work environment.
  • Ability to retain a cool head in a high-pressure environment and have an adept ability to multi-task and delegate tasks accordingly as required.
  • Good computer literacy with Word /Excel / PowerPoint / Outlook.
