THE TEAM

The Pacific Political Coordinator is an integral part of a passionate and committed team dedicated to fostering Pacific values, and ensuring that GPAP is a strong movement ally in the fight for Pacific Climate Justice through our work in the Pacific. This role sits in our Program department, and joins a growing team consisting of the Head of Pacific, Pacific Engagement Coordinator, Pacific Community Engagement Coordinator, and Pacific Community Mobiliser. 

THE ROLE

The Pacific Political Coordinator will play a leading role in amplifying work being done to confront the climate crisis and ocean protection across the Pacific Islands. Working closely with the Head of Pacific, the Pacific Political Coordinator will actively engage with Pacific governments, inter-governmental organisations and civil society organisations to understand the regional political landscape. This role will meaningfully add value to Greenpeace’s priority campaigns and amplify Pacific climate and ocean protection demands, with a particular focus on our campaign to end deep sea mining.


THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

We are looking for someone who will help deliver on the climate and ocean’s political strategic objectives working with multiple  stakeholders and other members of the Greenpeace Pacific Vuvale (family). You will  actively contribute  your unique skills and expertise while being willing to continuously learn and grow.

You will be skilled at building and maintaining deep and meaningful relationships with Pacific Ministers, government officials, and key influencers in the Pacific region, and confidently represent GPAP at political meetings, in the media, and to political and business audiences. You will also have experience developing international and regional political strategies in the Pacific, in alignment with our campaign objectives.

In addition you will have:

  • Demonstrated high level political networking and stakeholder relationship management experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of the environmental issues in the Pacific Islands, including but not limited to deep sea mining 
  • An understanding of Pacific political and advocacy landscape and the skills to evaluate the effectiveness of GPAP’s efforts to build political influencing capability within our organisation
  • The skills to contribute to developing our Pacific political and campaign strategy and political advocacy efforts
  • Strengths in research and analysis to be able to contribute to governance processes and new opportunities
  • Experience developing  transparent and effective reporting of political lobbying, advocacy and engagement plans and progress
  • An understanding of the social structures and  geo-political landscape and influences of the Pacific Island Nations
  • Cultural competency with a  strong cultural understanding of the Pacific region and the ability to navigate both Western and Pacific cultural nuances and differences
  • At least 3 years experience in Pacific climate and/or ocean work, community engagement, political lobbying, campaigning or other relevant activity
  • At least 3 years experience in relationship management and stakeholder engagement
