About the role
The Packing Shed Manager will be responsible for managing everything factory; from staff, to machinery, to logistics or anything else which arises. Organises, controls and coordinates the strategic and operational management of the factory to ensure the proper and efficient operation of all physical aspects of the factory, to create and sustain safe and productive environments for occupants.
The successful applicant will be responsible for motivating and directing staff as well as the ongoing measurement of the facility’s performance. This role will be hands-on with a focus on ensuring quality control, maintaining high safety standards and driving efficiencies. Due to the variable nature of fresh produce, this role requires someone who is a quick thinker and able to adapt to changing circumstances as required. The successful candidate will possess a strong eye for detail and will be able to multi-task across all areas within the packing facility.

As the Packing Shed Manager, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing and ensuring the smooth and efficient operations of the packing facility. Your responsibilities will include:
- recruiting and training of all staff,
- supervising and managing a team of approximately 25 to 35 casual seasonal staff
- ensuring produce is packed to the highest standard,
Packing between 500 to 1000 boxes per day during peak season, your duties will extend to:
- overseeing maintenance programs and rigorously uphold strict adherence to all food safety protocols, whilst coordinating logistics for effective packing facility management.
Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to –
- Oversee, train and mentor casual employees to ensure a smooth packing operation.
- Record batches and daily throughput for each grower.
- Organise daily startup and shutdowns of machinery, general machinery repair and maintenance.
- Manage workers’ performance on the job - productivity, OH&S, initiatives, and absenteeism.
- Monitor an accurate record of production activities – product specifications, cleaning records, productivity records, and QA records.
- Maintain packing shed supplies and liaise with suppliers to ensure stock levels are maintained.
- Ensure food safety and quality requirements, and health regulations are met.
- Implement workplace health and safety (WHS) procedures and processes.
- Manage payroll if required
As the packing shed manager you will have periodic meetings with the board. These meetings will be used as a chance to review and report on:
- shed performance,
- future volume scheduling,
- crop quality assessments,
- wins and losses since previous meetings,
- HR report.
Desirable Criteria
- Operations Management experience across manufacturing, logistics or industrial environment with supporting qualification,
- Proven experience with staff management and the ability to manage and motivate a workforce with diverse multi-cultural backgrounds and differing skills in a fast-paced environment,
- Superior leadership skills and the ability to work under pressure,
- Strong Quality / Compliance, WH&S experience, and knowledge
The desire and ability to measure, monitor and improve key KPI’s and challenge the status quo.
Skill Level:
2 years employment experience as a Packhouse Manager/Facility Supervisor with relevant formal training or 3 years employment experience as a Packhouse Manager/Facility Supervisor with no formal training. HR experience is preferred also.
