We are looking for a best-in-class Payroll Specialist to work with on-shore and off-shore teams and partners, delivering an accurate and efficient fortnightly payroll across Australia and New Zealand. The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for coaching and mentoring a team of Payroll Consultants and Officers, ensuring correct award and legislative interpretation, driving process improvement and optimisation.
As part of a specialist team, you will create value for our clients by ensuring the effective and compliant delivery of payroll services, payroll audits, process improvements, and payroll activities are accurate and delivered within appropriate time frames and comply with relevant legislation, policies, and agreements. You will provide support and technical payroll expertise for initiatives and complex projects as required, building strong relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally.
What you’ll do
- Provide technical payroll subject matter expertise, advice and oversight to ensure the on-time, effective and compliant delivery of a fortnightly payroll.
- Ensure key milestones are met, while completing all tasks/ deliverables required for a successful payroll.
- Contribute to the identification and management of payroll-related risks and issues in a timely manner, including appropriate reporting and escalation.
- Support strong governance, stakeholder management and delivery of all payroll-related activities.
- Provide technical advice and support in relation to payroll, superannuation, tax queries as well as escalations and high-care matters.
- Support internal and external audit requests as and when necessary.
- Contribute to meeting and exceeding service level standards and (internal) customer satisfaction through effective utilisation of ServiceNow (our query management system).
- Provide technical support for and oversight of initiatives within the Payroll Operations team and People, Culture & Advocacy (PC&A) more broadly.
- Identify and implement opportunities to streamline, simplify and improve payroll standard operating procedures, intranet content, processes and templates, including identifying opportunities for automation.
- Work with the Payroll Operations Manager and other Payroll Specialists within the team, to support ongoing development, coaching, knowledge sharing and training of team members.
- Undertake and contribute to control testing, internal and external audits and compliance management, proactively identifying high-risk scenarios and contributing to risk planning, controls and mitigates.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the changing pay, super and tax landscape internally and externally, providing early insight into changes in legislation, compliance and obligations.
- Research, analyse and recommend on current and potential payroll compliance, opportunities, and issues, including evaluating business impacts.
- Actively engage in knowledge sharing and cross skilling across People Operations, PC&A and Suncorp.
What you’ll bring
- Accounting, Finance, Business or HR degree - desirable
- 8+ years demonstrated experience within a complex payroll environment in a mid to large organisation.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret complex payroll and regulatory requirements and translate into recommendations.
- Demonstrated operational experience and technical skills across the full payroll ambit (including Single Touch Payroll, taxation, payroll tax, workers compensation and income protection, long service leave, redundancy), with prior experience in a payroll transition as part of a broader business transition program.
- Demonstrated experience leading and coaching a team of dedicated Payroll professionals.
- Ability to analyse and understand data, resulting in the provision of data driven insights.
- Superior organisational, prioritisation and time management skills.
- Ability to work autonomously, proactively identifying what needs to be done and working through available materials and resources to resolve or escalate as required.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex payroll concepts in a way that is easily understood by non-payroll professionals.
- Experience in leading payroll projects including data migration, system implementations and enhancements, and process changes.
- Exceptional learning agility, a sense of humour, openness to asking questions and a desire to be part of a fast moving and high performing team.
