About the role:
We have an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic team leading our approach to the provision of person centered care to clients of the Drug Health Service.

The Peer Support Worker (PSW) works alongside clinicians and is an integral part of the Drug Health Service (ADS) clinical team, contributing to care planning and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the best outcome for clients of the service. The primary responsibility of the Peer Support Worker (PSW) will be to engage and support clients that present to St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney (SVHS) with drug and alcohol related conditions within a strength-based framework. The PSW will use their own lived experience and relevant training to provide support, education, advocacy and guidance to help people access services.

The PSW will work with individuals and support group work to help people experiencing problematic alcohol and drug use to direct and manage their own health needs. The role will support individuals, and where appropriate their families, on how to navigate the health system and by referring people to appropriate services for ongoing treatment and support. The PSW will utilise harm reduction principles and their own knowledge to help people to make decisions about their treatment.

About you:
We are seeking a skilled and energetic Peer Worker who possess a passion for person centred care. We welcome applications from people who have a lived experience of alcohol and other drug use and accessing alcohol and other drug services.

Selection Criteria:
1. Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia
2. Identify as someone with lived experience of alcohol and other drug use and accessing alcohol and other drug services 
3. Knowledge/familiarity of the AOD sector, other community and health supports, and an understanding of client rights (e.g. confidentiality)  
4. Ability to work effectively with people with alcohol and other drug use issues and their significant others, within a harm minimisation framework, and in a respectful, compassionate, and positive manner. 
5. Understanding of drug and alcohol related conditions with the ability to apply lived experience to support others. 
6. An understanding and commitment to harm reduction principles in drug and alcohol services. 
7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively, both independently and within a health care team environment.  
8. Demonstrated clear written and verbal communication skills
