The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) is the peak advocacy body representing the interests of local government at a national level. As a federation of state and territory local government associations, ALGA represents the interests of Australia’s 537 councils.
With a vision to be the united, strong voice for Australian local government, ALGA aims to achieve this by providing advice and advocacy services to its member associations and, through them, local councils throughout Australia.
About the role:
ALGA is seeking a motivated policy professional to join the organisation in a new Policy Adviser role. Working with the policy team, the Policy Adviser will promote the interests of local government across the Federal Government.
The Policy Adviser will report directly to ALGA’s Executive Director – Policy and contribute to the policy team developing, articulating, and communicating ALGA’s policy positions. They will support ALGA shape and influence public policy and funding outcomes for local governments at the national level.
The Policy Adviser will be responsible for supporting policy development, analysis, and engagement across one or more of ALGA’s policy priorities. The Policy Adviser may also be required to represent ALGA at external meetings, including relevant government and stakeholder working groups.
Successful candidate:
ALGA is seeking a highly motivated policy professional for this new position. The successful candidate will have skills and experience in policy development and analysis to support ALGA’s ongoing policy work. Relevant areas could include:
- Economics

- Energy
- Housing and planning
- Jobs, skills, and training
The successful candidate will have 2 to 3 years experience developing policy positions in a government department, statutory authority, peak body, or equivalent. They will also understand the Australian political system, federal public service, and policy processes.
