Primary objective
Work under limited direction to support the development and implementation of the strategic policy agenda and
management of information relevant to key portfolios in the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services
(NTPFES). The core function of the position is to assist in the coordination of papers for national forums and briefings, and
development of the agency policy position including analysis and interpretation of research, Policy and legislation.
Context statement
The Strategic Policy Unit provides policy advice, leads policy related projects, and is responsible for the national and strategic
policy agenda of the agency. As the Policy and Project Officer, you will provide high quality program support and governance
to the unit, and that of the NTPFES, whilst working in a sensitive environment that is subject to competing deadlines and
priorities.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist in the analysis, development and implementation of strategic policy, projects and organisational change.
2. Undertake research and prepare information on a range of topics including written submissions and contribute to
briefings for senior executive and government on contentious or emerging issues.
3. Maintain and apply sound contemporary understanding of the machinery of government and relevant social and
organisational environments affecting law enforcement and community safety.
4. Provide coordination and advice for senior executive forums, including for internal, interstate and national forums.
5. Develop and maintain effective partnerships with key stakeholders.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to analyse, interpret and present complex information for submissions and executive consideration.
2. Proven ability to conduct targeted, timely and high quality research to support policy analysis and development, and
projects.
3. Effective oral and written communication skills to provide advice and prepare briefs, reports, and correspondence.
4. Strong collaborative skills with a demonstrated ability to establish and sustain productive working relationships with
colleagues and a range of internal and external stakeholders.
5. Proven ability to prioritise, schedule and perform work under pressure to meet critical deadlines and commitments
while maintaining quality standards.
Desirable
1. Undergraduate degree in policy, social sciences or other relevant discipline.
2. An understanding of internal and external issues likely to impact upon the NTPFES.
