About the opportunity
The University of Sydney’s is welcoming applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in AquaticAnimal Health Diagnostics to work closely with on an exciting project funded by the Fisheries Research Development Corporation (FRDC).
Global and domestic trends in Aquatic Animal production and trade indicate that Australia will increasingly require agile, strong, and modern diagnostic systems to effectively manage disease risks for aquatic species. This project will seek to forecast diagnostic needs and understand the changing demands for Aquatic Animal Health diagnostic services in Australia. For example, activities such as the safe translocation of stock between states, the establishment of specific pathogen free (SPF) broodstock, point-of-care-testing, emerging production diseases and increasing requirements from trading partners, will require robust diagnostic technologies that are reliable, fit-for-purpose and accessible within the diagnostic network.
In this role, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts specialising in Aquatic Animal Health Diagnostics, encompassing industry veterinarians, specialised consultants and academic researchers.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
generate a map of the current operators and regulators of the diagnostic network for Aquatic Animal Health in Australia
conduct a scoping study of existing, emerging and novel diagnostic technologies
lead and conduct a consultation process with stakeholders involved in Aquatic Animal Health Diagnostics in Australia
analyse and summarise data from the stakeholder consultation process
prepare and submit milestone reports for the FRDC.
About you

a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Aquatic Animal Health, Aquaculture, Epidemiology)
familiarity with molecular diagnostic techniques, histopathology, or other relevant laboratory methods for disease detection in Aquatic Animals
strong capability to prepare comprehensive research reports and present findings to both scientific and non-scientific audiences
exceptional time management skills, with a consistent history of meeting project deadlines and delivering outputs on time
the ability to initiate, plan, and execute research projects with minimal supervision, demonstrating a high level of self-direction
a proven track record of publishing high-quality scientific research in peer-reviewed journals
experience in applying for research funding or grants with an understanding of the research proposal process is a plus
