The Australian Veteran Health Services (AVHS) is a boutique medical service designed to assist Australian Military personnel in their transition from military life to civilian life. We are a multidisciplinary team of medical practitioners, occupational nurses, liability clerks, psychologists and support staff run by Veterans for Veterans.
AVHS aims to complement existing transition services with a belief that provision of these services will assist Veterans in the most vulnerable part of their lives – the transition from military to civilian life.
The Role
We are looking for a full time Practice Nurse to join our Canberra practice as a key team member, working collaboratively with an experienced team of Nurses and General Practitioners to provide high quality care for all patients. This role will be based remotely initially with the intention of moving to full time in our clinic later in the year. The Practice Nurse role is largely non-clinical with occasional requirement to conduct ECG’s or similar.
Position Responsibilities
Being a Practice Nurse is an integral role that sits within AVHS’s Intake Department. The responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Providing Veteran centered care, focusing on maintenance of ongoing health, to current and past serving members of the Australian Military.
- Initial review of the patient files (demographics and sensitive medical information)
- Conducting a private, comprehensive and full assessment with each Veteran either via telephone or face to face in the Canberra office. This is utilising the documentation supplied from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), Department of Defence, and civilian medical records in collaboration with the Veteran. The nurse will ensure respect and dignity is maintained for the Veteran throughout this assessment. Assessments include physical, physiological assessments and mental health assessments
- Conducting preventative screening.
- Discussion with the Veteran surrounding additional services they may consider accessing for ongoing treatment of their conditions. These can include Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Psychology, Psychiatry etc.
- Organising further referrals to specialists in consultation with the Medical Officers.
- Typing of reports during nursing assessment and post Medical Officer consultation.
- Assisting Medical Officers (including chaperoning) with patient consultations if required (for Range of Movement assessments etc).
- Ensuring electronic medical record is maintained post consultation and any follow up is actioned in a timely manner.
- Using evidence-based practice to ensure clinical guidelines and nursing domains are being met and delivery of the highest quality care is maintained for Veterans of this service.
- Generation of recall and reminder lists
Qualification and Requirements
To be considered for the role of Practice Nurse you must have :
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing or equivalent.
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
- Current indemnity insurance
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience working as a nurse.
