Principal AdvisorGladstone Power Station Joint Venture

  • Collaborating across multiple teams helping to establish the Aluminium business of the future
  • Bepart of a team that is forward thinking and passionate about delivering decarbonisation and energy solutions to meet the future needs of the Aluminium business
  • Permanent role based in Brisbane or Gladstone
About the role
Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.
To reach the next level of productivity improvement and establish the Aluminium business of the future, Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) needs to further leverage its position; with respect of its Gladstone assets, Pacific Operations relies on a consistent ongoing supply of energy in order to sustain production of aluminium at the Boyne Smelter (BSL). Accordingly, the Gladstone Power Station (GPS) is a critical asset in reliably meeting the energy demands for BSL and Queensland more broadly. The well established Joint Venture has been set up to ensure that the interests of the customers, suppliers and operator are well managed.
With this in mind, we are looking for a Principal Advisor - Gladstone Power Station Joint Venture, to be part of the Pacific Operations Decarbonisation and Energy Team. This role works closely with the Operator of the Gladstone Power Station and all Owners in the Joint Venture (JV), while ensuring that the JV is managed successfully and meets Rio Tinto’s obligations under JV arrangements.
This is a great opportunity to be an integral member of the Decarbonisation and Energy team, which is committed to making a real difference to the way we run our business, both financially and operationally.
Reporting to the Manager - Gladstone Power Station Joint Venture you will:
Joint Venture Management and Governance
  • Ensure key obligations are fulfilled under a suite of agreements governing the Gladstone Power Station Joint Venture (GPS JV)
  • Working closely with the Chair and Directors of the GPS JV, co-ordination of meetings and preparation of required board papers for the Joint Venture Management, Operations and Finance Committees
  • Provide regular JV reporting and key documentation to the GPS Participants
  • Oversee the financial responsibilities on behalf of the GPS Participants
Commercial and Stakeholder Management
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for the GPS Participants, playing a vital role in managing relationships with the GPS Participants, the GPS Operator, CS Energy and other relevant stakeholders
  • Drive the procurement strategy and negotiation of the GPS coal agreement/s
  • Ensuring effective insurance coverage for GPS
  • Co-ordinate and contribute to the annualplanning process for the GPS JV
  • Acting as an accounting interface to the GPS Participants and Rio Tinto Aluminium
  • Provide support to the development and integration of the future pathways of the GPS as part of the energy transition
About you
To be successfully considered for this role you will have:
  • A strong safety focus, demonstrating a commitment to your own safety and to those around you
  • A demonstrated interest and passion for the future of Energy
  • A university education is preferred but not essential – a Bachelor’s degree with a significant commercial component (e.g. commerce, economics, finance or law) or Engineering
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, and a good team player with the ability to interact effectively as a leader or team member
  • A high level of initiative, a strategic mindset and a focus on continuous improvement
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven analytical skills with good attention to detail and the ability to work independently
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, in particular Excel and PowerPoint
About Rio Tinto
Rio Tinto is a leading global mining and materials company. We operate in 35 countries where we produce iron ore, copper, aluminium, critical minerals and other materials needed for the global energy transition and for people, communities, and nations to thrive. We have been mining for 150 years and operate with knowledge built up across generations and continents. Our purpose is finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs – striving for innovation and continuous improvement to produce materials with low emissions and to the right environmental, social and governance standards. But we can’t do it on our own, so we’re focused on creating partnerships to solve problems, create win-win and meet opportunities.
Where you’ll be working
Rio Tinto is a global leader in aluminium, one of the world’s most widely used metals.
Active in the sector for more than 110 years, today we operate large-scale, high-quality bauxite mines and alumina refineries, and have the world’s most modern and competitive aluminium smelter portfolio.
Our Pacific Operations sites are located along the east coast of Australia, at the tip of the Northern Territory and in New Zealand’s south. With more than 6,000 employees, we operate a full value chain approach—mining, refining and smelting. Our portfolio includes four bauxite mines, two refineries, four smelters and one Power Station, and is supported by technical experts located in our Brisbane hub, including a fully operational Operations Centre for our bauxite mines.
This opportunity will be based in either Brisbane or Gladstone, Queensland. Should you be based in Brisbane, monthly travel to Gladstone will be required. Given our internationally based JV partners, you will also be provided the opportunity to travel to Japan on an annual basis.
Every Voice Matters
At Rio Tinto, we want you to be you. We want everyone, everywhere, to feel their voice is heard and respected and we’re committed to fostering a culture where individual differences—whatever they may be—are appreciated and valued. At Rio Tinto, we particularly welcome and encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the LGBTI+ community, mature workers, people with disabilities and people from different cultural backgrounds.
Apply today if you want to work with the latest technology and innovation, in an environment where we support you to drive positive change.
Please note, in order to be successfully considered for a role you must complete all pre-screening questions.
Applications close on 22 January 2024 (Rio Tinto reserves the right to close advertising prior to this date).
