Te āhuatunga a te tūranga - About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Advisor to join our Judicial Education (Design and Delivery) team within Te Kura Kaiwhakawā (Te Kura). Te Kura provides ongoing education and legal resources to support the judiciary of Aotearoa New Zealand.

A Principal Advisor, Judicial Education will take ownership of the development and delivery of education and professional development initiatives for the judiciary. We are looking for someone with subject-matter expertise in family law, who has the ability to lead and execute the development, design, and delivery of Te Kura's family law curriculum. In addition to the programme development work, the Principal Advisor will also research and produce high-quality legal content for Te Kura's Family Court Bench Book and associated judicial resources.

The Principal Advisor will support the Deputy Director, Curriculum Design and Delivery to ensure the curriculum needs of all judges are met. This means leading the process of programme development, with a strong focus on effective and professional delivery, as well as supporting those judges and experts who are involved with each programme.

He pūkenga tou - Skills and experience

To be successful in the position you will:
  • have a tertiary qualification in law, preferably at post-graduate level, coupled with at least eight to ten years' post-graduation experience in practice, legal policy, law reform, and/or academia
  • have admission in New Zealand as a barrister and solicitor or eligibility to be admitted
  • Ideally have experience in teaching/adult education
  • have exceptional written skills and the ability to meet the given audiences' needs
  • be a proven communicator and be able to build trusted relationships across a wide range of audiences
  • have a working knowledge of the judiciary and machinery of government
  • have experience mentoring and developing junior staff and peers
  • have strong project management and problem-solving skills, and an ability to work with multiple stakeholders
  • bring an understanding of te ao Māori, te reo and tikanga and a personal commitment to continuing to develop knowledge of, and in, these three areas
  • show initiative, resilience, and a commitment to working collaboratively in a small team.

Te Kura Kaiwhakawā is the education and development arm of Aotearoa New Zealand's judiciary. We develop and deliver events, programmes and resources that support judges and judicial officers at all stages of their careers.

Te Kura is a business unit of Te Tari Toko i te Tumu Whakawā - the Office of the Chief Justice (Te Tari) that supports the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal and Chief Judge of the High Court in their leadership and administrative responsibilities. Te Tari is a business unit of Te Tahu o te Ture - the Ministry of Justice.

The role is Wellington based, but we are happy to consider flexible working arrangements.

Salary range

The appointing salary for this position will be between $100,221 and $130,876 based on skills and experience.
