Who we are
Transgrid is at the forefront of Australia's transition to a clean energy future. Our transmission infrastructure is the backbone of the National Electricity Market, and we are pursuing a nation-changing portfolio of infrastructure projects that will accelerate the decarbonisation of our economy.
Transgrid's System Security Analysis team is a newly created team within Network Planning, responsible for designing the future power system to ensure safe and secure operation at up to 100% instantaneous renewables, with a focus on analysing and developing new infrastructure and services for system strength, inertia and voltage support.
The Opportunity
Are you an experienced power system expert, passionate about enabling the rapid transformation of Australia's electricity system? Do you have a deep expertise in power system modelling and design, a creative mindset and a keen interest in new technologies like grid forming batteries?
We are hiring for a Principal Engineer in the System Security Analysis team. The Principal Engineer provides technical leadership and undertakes specialist analysis to assess optimum solutions and technical requirements for system strength, inertia and voltage support and other stability issues, from equipment and services such as synchronous generators, synchronous condensers and grid forming batteries.
In this role, the Principal Engineer will:
- Perform the role of technical specialist in power systems analysis for System Security, in particular leading the technical analysis behind Transgrid's system strength RIT-T
- Be a power system modelling expert in wide area PSCAD, PSSE and other modelling packages such as PowerFactory, Mudpack or SSAT
- Investigate and trial new technologies and services to provide System Security throughout the energy transition, with a deep understanding of grid forming inverter capabilities. Liaise with proponents and equipment manufacturers to assess technical capabilities and costs.
- Have a creative mindset to support the techno-economic assessment of the optimal portfolio of solutions for System Security, assess the technical credibility of new technologies and support commercial negotiations with proponents
- Support the development and deployment of Transgrid's System Security Roadmap, developing and implementing infrastructure, services, tools and systems to enable the secure operation of our network at up to 100% instantaneous renewable energy, with a focus on how Transgrid's Network Planning team evolves to meet evolving system needs.
Skills & Experience
What we expect from you:
- Significant experience in power system and transmission planning
- Extensive experience in the analysis and development of electricity transmission systems and modelling of renewable energy generators, batteries and synchronous machines, including expert in the use of PSCAD, PSSE, python and other software packages
- Being familiar with any small signal modelling platform is advantageous, but good understanding of small signal concept is necessary
- Strong knowledge of the National Electricity Market including rules and regulations
- Good understanding of synchronous and synchronous generators operation and control.
- Well-developed analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills and an interest in strategic and commercial aspects of delivering new technologies into the electricity system
- A creative and collaborative approach - eager to guide the planning of ‘the electricity system of the future'
- Effective written and verbal communication with a range of stakeholders including customers, suppliers, contractors, other technical experts and senior management
- Tertiary qualifications at degree level in an appropriate discipline, or equivalent relevant experience
