Located 250km north-east of Carnarvon, Hastings’ flagship Yangibana Project is underpinned by a high-quality deposit of neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) with an initial mine life of 17 years.
With rare earth concentrate production due in the first half of 2025, the Yangibana project is well timed to meet the supply gap for rare earth elements driven by the growth in electric vehicles and wind turbines vital for the global energy transition.

About the role
The Principal Mine Planning Engineer will be responsible for leading the Mine Planning function at Hastings. This role will be vital in optimising the multiple pit mine plan, ensuring the required ore quality is provided to the process plant.
Key activities will include:
- Progress the mine optimisation processes
- Optimise the mine plan to manage demand on the process plant
- Partner with our geologists, metallurgists and environmentalists to ensure the mine plan is robust, achievable, efficient and cost effective
- Provide and share innovative ideas with regard to mining options and associated benefits these may deliver
- Complete a thorough review, recommend and then implement suitable software systems by engaging with relevant providers
- Support project studies as required
- Provide quality leadership across the Life of Mine, Resource & Reserve, and Budget planning cycles
- Develop and build the Mine Planning Team ensuring alignment with the Hastings Values.
Key outcomes for the role:
- Provide input into the strategic plan by owning the Life of Mine, Resource & Reserve, and budget planning cycles
- Provide expert advice and guidance that supports long-term decision-making by Hastings
- Ensure long- and short-term decisions are aligned with the Hastings strategic plan
- Manage, develop and maintain mining systems, including documenting practices and procedures, and provide feedback on the effectiveness of these systems to the Operations Leadership Team
- Ensure professional application of all technical disciplines to deliver optimised mine designs and schedules, including geotechnical, haulage, waste dump design optimisation, including TSF lifts and importantly grade, tonnage and cost optimisation

About You
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering
- Degree in mineral economics and/or business management is desirable
- Quarry Manager qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in a similar operational management position
- Extensive open pit mining experience, preferably gold, base metals or lithium
- Advanced knowledge of safe, surface mining standards and techniques
- Exposure to different mining methods and associated economics
- Operational experience would be advantageous.
