Minderoo’s Oceans, of which Plastics is a part, Focus Area’s, aim is to return the ocean to a healthy state, free from pollution and safeguarded for future generations. While Oceans’ work focuses primarily in the Indo-Pacific region and we may also look at neighbouring regions (e.g. Eastern Pacific Ocean and Southern Ocean), harms to from plastic are global and require global solutions.

Job Description
About the Opportunity
This critical role is required to be based in Perth, Western Australia, but engaging with global stakeholders. Reporting to the Head of Plastics & Human Health where you will actively contribute to, and drive impact in the high-performing Plastic and Human Health (PHH) team.
This is a newly created role, which offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference to protect and eliminate harm to Human Health during plastic production, use and waste management. You will use your expertise to drive global policy change across the plastic life cycle.
PHH is a team of ten staff, who examine exposure to plastics, including chemicals, micro- and nanoplastics, across the life cycle of production, use and disposal, and the harms to Human Health.
The successful candidate will support the Head of Plastics & Human Health in the strategic development, quality assurance and impact delivery for key-stone research bodies of work, both for literature reviews and for externally funded research projects.
Our theory of change is to 1) synthesise existing published evidence, 2) create new evidence by developing cutting-edge infrastructure and techniques to evaluate health impacts from before birth to old age and 3) collaborate with leading experts with the capacity to influence public health and policy through governments and intergovernmental organisations such as the United Nations. Findings are published in high quality peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as in audited publicly available reports.
Liaison and collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders including, international bodies, external research institutes and universities, government and industry organisations.
Qualifications
About You
To be successful you will have subject matter expert in this area, and have experience collaborating with world-class national and international scientists and clinicians. You will offer:
  • Extensive and demonstrable experience in medical research and its governance and administration, improving outcomes and driving impact in this area.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in science (PhD) and / or medicine essential. Expertise in chemical exposure and/or epidemiology would be highly regarded.
  • High level of commitment and proven ability to problem-solve complex social, economic and or environmental problems and influence change.
  • Significant experience in the delivery of complex, multi-stakeholder programs involving government, industry, academia, and other stakeholders.
  • Scientific writing skills demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications.
  • Capacity to anticipate risks, identify their long-term implications, assess the situation, and prioritise efforts to mitigate those risks.
  • Ability to be permanently located in Perth, Western Australia.
