The Curtin Institute for Data Science (CIDS) is an interdisciplinary knowledge accelerator established in 2016 to meet increasing demand for computational modelling. Our aim is to apply data science and high-performance computing to provide innovative solutions to the real-world problems of government, industry, and academia.
The Institute supports a growing network of SMEs, external organisations, government departments, researchers, co-operative research centres, and not-for-profits across various sectors such as, but not limited to, health sciences, manufacturing, transport, art and culture, astronomy, agriculture, and aquaculture. At present the Institute would typically contribute to 30-40 research projects per annum, working with over 50 external organisations.

Your new role
We are seeking a detail-orientated Program Manager to join our team. This role will lead the ARDC team which sits within the CIDS and will report to the Institute Director and the ARDC Expertise Team Manager. You will provide subject matter expertise to support programs of work for and across the ARDC’s Strategic Pillars and support the ARDC’s Research Software Agenda for Australia working with researchers and partners to promote software as a first-class research output, enhancing its visibility, value and use in Australian research.
Responsibilities will include:
- Providing expertise, support, and liaison activities to a portfolio of programs and services in the area of Research Software to support the ARDC in achieving strategic objectives.
- Lead the ARDC Software Program, developing and reviewing policies, strategies and new initiatives, ensuring the successful implementation of program goals within assigned budget and resource allocations.
- Identify and manage interactions between the Software program and related activities in programs under the other ARDC Strategic Pillars, including undertaking complex, significant and high-level creative planning for cross-program activities.
- Conceptualise, formulate and lead Software engagement opportunities, co-ordinating, managing and implementing with selected partners and stakeholders, and ensuring effective tracking of the impact of ARDC investment.
- Engage and influence key internal and external stakeholders to agree on program deliverables, timelines, and implementation methods.
- Work with stakeholders to prepare business cases, project briefs and proposals.
- Manage implementation of program initiatives and monitor and evaluate program performance.
- Liaise with portfolio lead team and work closely with other areas within the unit, including the other managers and specialists, to ensure alignment of program activities with broader directorate plans, priorities, and business goals.
- Provide leadership and guidance to staff, through effective talent management, career planning, performance reviews and development.
- Undertake other activities which the incumbent might reasonably be expected to do, and which are consistent with the accountabilities and responsibilities as listed above.
- Post-graduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or extensive management experience and proven management expertise; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education training.
- Demonstrated high level planning, management, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated commercial acumen and ability to conceptualise, develop and review organisational strategies.
- Demonstrated high level interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage and influence others and to build and maintain effective and productive relationships with a wide range of internal and external groups.
- Demonstrated high level verbal communication and negotiation skills and the ability to resolve stakeholder concerns, whilst balancing obligations and operational requirements.
- Demonstrated high level written communication skills with the ability to write clear concise, authoritative and persuasive reports, proposals and submissions.
- Demonstrated commitment to, and experience in, effectively promoting, managing, and implementing significant change.
- A demonstrated background in the technical production of Research Software.
- Demonstrated understanding of the research lifecycle, and the complexities involved in supporting research, the role of Research Software, and the experience of Research Software developers.
- Demonstrated experience delivering subject matter expertise and specialist knowledge of the issues involved in the management of research data and software.
- Extensive and exceptional project management experience and skills, with a proven record of successfully managing all aspects of large, complex, and organisational wide projects through to completion.
- Exceptional analytical, evaluation and research skills including demonstrated ability to quickly assimilate new concepts and information and deliver positive, innovative solutions.
